Dad sentenced to prison for death of 1-month-old son (West Jordan, Utah)

Dastardly Dads - Thu, 02/14/2013 - 08:05
A "caretaking" dad and no mention of a mother--even though the baby was only 1-month old. Did killer dad find the baby in the cabbage patch?

Draper father sentenced to prison in shaking death of infant son

Published: Wednesday, Feb. 13 2013 5:58 p.m. MST

Mijail Alejandro Russell-Torres, 25, has been sentenced to prison for the shaking death of his 1-month-old son Theodore.

WEST JORDAN — A Draper father who pleaded guilty in the shaking death of his 1-month-old son has been sentenced to prison.

Mijail Alejandro Russell-Torres, 25, was sentenced to two terms of one to 15 years in prison for child abuse homicide and child abuse inflicting serious physical injury, both second-degree felonies. Third District Judge Charlene Barlow ordered that the prison terms run concurrently.

Rusell-Torres called 911 in August claiming his 1-month-old son, Theodore, had drowned while he was bathing him in his Draper home near 13000 S. Pinnacle Way. The baby was not breathing when he was transported by medical helicopter to Primary Children's Medical Center.

Doctors at the hospital told Draper police that the baby was showing signs of shaken-baby syndrome, including a head injury. Doctors also said the baby showed no signs of drowning.

When asked about the doctors' findings, Russell-Torres apparently admitted holding the baby and violently shaking him forward and backward, according to a police report. He allegedly told police he realized he hurt the baby after it started showing other signs of illness, which is when he gave the baby a bath.

It wasn't until the baby turned cold and stopped breathing that Russell-Torres called 911, the report states. He pleaded guilty to the charges in November.

Marine is charged with murder

UPDATED: 2:14 AM Feb 14 2013

Jordan Thomas King, 27, of Kennebec Lane in Richlands, was also charged with intentional child abuse inflicting serious injury.

Investigators said King fractured the skull of his two-month-old son, Deklin John King. The 911 call came in on Feb. 8. According to Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown, the baby's crying may have set the father off.

"The injuries were so severe to the vital organs of the baby [that] without the life support, he could not live," Sheriff Brown said.

King brought his son to Vidant Medical Center after the assault, deputies said. At 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13, the baby's life support was removed. He died about two hours later.

On Thursday, officials will determine when an autopsy will be performed.

According to arrest warrants, King fractured his two-month-old son's skull in two places. The child also suffered severe bruising in the back of the head.

A neighbor said he had no idea that an attack took place.

"I didn't see anything coming out of there," said William Corzo, who lives just down the road from the Kings. "No screaming, no yelling; nothing like that. It's sad. It's a two-month-old baby. It's literally heartbreaking."

King is a Marine with Combat Logistics Battalion 22 at Camp Lejeune. According to base officials, King joined the Marine Corps in April, 2008, and is an electrical systems technician.

King was placed in the Onslow County Jail under no bond.

Columbus, OH: Man held for allegedly stabbing wife to death

Intimate Violence Deaths in the News - Thu, 02/14/2013 - 07:42
Police said they were trying to figure out why a couple, who seemed happy to neighbors, would end up with the 72-year-old husband stabbing his wife to death in their North Side home last night.

Leif H. Mortensen called 911 about 2:30 p.m. yesterday and told a dispatcher that his wife, Margaret R. Mortensen, 74, was dead in the kitchen of their North Side home, 4930 Kingpin Dr., Columbus police homicide Sgt. Christ Holzhauser said.

Mortensen, who was charged with murder last night, told the dispatcher that after stabbing his wife he tried to cut his own throat, Holzhauser said he was taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital in critical condition, but last night his wounds were said not to be life-threatening.The 911 dispatcher was able to keep Mortensen on the phone almost until police arrived.

He came outside the house with wounds in his neck and throat.

“We don’t have any indication as to why this individual did this,” Holzhauser said. “Even speaking with one of the family members, they’re surprised by the event.”

Mortensen gave little explanation to the 911 dispatcher as to why he would stab his wife, other than saying “there wasn’t a problem between him and her,” Holzhauser said.

Mortensen also said that he had never tried to kill himself before, Holzhauser said.

Neighbors in the quiet, 1990s subdivision south of the Minerva Lake Golf Course were stunned to hear what happened involving the friendly couple they saw heading to church and doing yard work.

“In this crazy world, they were normal,” said Vicki Kovarik, who lives next door.

The Mortensens bought the 1,351-square-foot home in 2008.

Pete Miller said he would see the couple out and about.

“They were always waving. They seemed so nice,” Miller said. “It’s a shame.”

Jane Mowrer said the couple seemed healthy and got along well. She never heard any problems between the husband and wife.

“I envied them, because I’m not married, and they seemed so cute,” she said. “You never know.”The death is the 10th homicide of the year in Columbus, police said.

'BLADE RUNNER' GUNS DOWN GIRLFRIEND

STRANGE CRIMES - Thu, 02/14/2013 - 07:30
South African paralympic star Oscar Pistorius has been charged with murder and is in custody after reportedly shooting his girlfriend dead in the middle of the night after mistaking her for a burglar.

Gunfire was heard inside his Pretoria mansion at 4am this morning and it is believed his partner may have been killed after a Valentine's Day surprise went tragically wrong.

The dead woman is Reeva Steenkamp, 30, a former FHM model who had been dating the 26-year-old for two months.

She was shot in the head, the chest and the arm, police have said, and Pistorius will appear in court tomorrow after a hearing scheduled for this afternoon was cancelled.

Pretoria police spokeswoman Denise Beukes confirmed he had been charged with murder, adding they had been called to his home on several occasions since 2011 to deal with 'allegations of a domestic nature'.

Just yesterday Miss Steenkamp spoke excitedly on Twitter about her plans for Valentine's Day.

She said: 'What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow??? #getexcited #ValentinesDay'

Replying to a follower, she later added: 'That sounds amazing! Wow that's what it's all about! It should be a day of love for everyone :) may it be blessed!'  More
