Man accused of impersonating deputy to impress girlfriend

STRANGE CRIMES - Wed, 02/27/2013 - 19:48
PASCO COUNTY, Fla. — Authorities say a man who worked at Pizza Hut is accused of impersonating a Pasco County Sheriff's Deputy to impress his girlfriend.

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office says 37-year-old Christopher Sharp was trying to impress his girlfriend. But the scheme landed him in jail after his Feb. 22 arrest.

The Tampa Tribune reports that between August and January he told his live-in girlfriend that he was a Pasco deputy.

He came home wearing a Pasco County Sheriff's uniform and often told his girlfriend, family and friends stories about things that happened during his shift.

He even entertained partygoers on New Year's Eve with stories about DUI enforcement he'd been involved with earlier that evening.  More

Christina Black, Convicted of Killing Grandma With a Piece of Fruit, Kills Herself in Prison

STRANGE CRIMES - Wed, 02/27/2013 - 19:42
The Arizona Department of Corrections says convicted murderer Christina Black apparently killed herself on Tuesday.

Black, a 52-year-old former Apache Junction resident, had been in prison since 1999, when she was sentenced to life after fessing up to murdering her grandmother with a piece of fruit.

According to a 1999 Associated Press story, Black's grandmother, 88-year-old Helen Gerstung, died in April 1995, and Apache Junction cops found no signs of foul play.

Black moved to Florida after her grandmother's death, and a year later, phoned up police in Orlando to confess -- she had killed her grandmother with a kiwi fruit, a blanket, and a plastic bag.

Indeed, according to that AP story, police exhumed Gerstung's body, and found kiwi seeds in her mouth, chunks of kiwi in her throat, and six of her ribs had been broken.  More

Man, 36, Assaulted Teen Relative With Taco Bell Burrito

STRANGE CRIMES - Wed, 02/27/2013 - 19:38

A Florida man is facing a misdemeanor charge after allegedly battering a teenage relative with a Taco Bell burrito.

Police allege that Erik Brown, 36, throttled the 16-year-old boy in the face with the burrito during a February 15 domestic dispute at a Port St. Lucie residence.

The victim told cops that he was having a “verbal altercation” with his mother and Brown, his brother-in-law, when Brown “asked his mother to bring him the burrito,” according to an arrest affidavit.

Brown then allegedly threw the burrito “with force” at the victim, striking the boy in the face with the fast food item. While

interviewing the teen, cops noted that he had “burrito cheese, sauce and meat all over his clothing and face.”  Full Article

Virginia Man Continues Fight to Clear His Name

Innocence Project - Wed, 02/27/2013 - 12:45

A Virginia man who plead guilty in juvenile court to a 2007 rape and breaking and entering charge on the advice of a court-appointed lawyer will have a chance to clear his name at a hearing in July to determine if the lawyer violated his right to effective defense.

The Free Lance Star reports that on June 4, 2007, 15-year-old Edgar Coker had consensual sexual relations with his 14-year-old neighbor in the girl's bedroom. At the time, the girl claimed rape to avoid getting into trouble with her mother. But two months after Coker was sent to juvenile detention, she admitted the fabrication. Now, both families want to clear Coker's record.

Now 21, Coker was released from custody three years ago, but was required to register as a sex offender. Since then, a team of attorneys, including the Innocence Project at the University of Virginia Law School, has been trying to get his name removed from the registry.

The hearing is scheduled for July 16 and 17.
