"Caretaking" dad charged with abusing 5-week-old daughter (Butler, Tennessee)

Wed, 05/08/2013 - 15:30
Yet another case where Daddy was doing child "care" while Mom was working--even though the baby was still a newborn. This is one reason we need paid maternity leaves in this country--so moms aren't forced to use unemployed/underemployed goons for babysitters...

Dad is identified as MATHEW CLEMONS.

By Staff Report - JohnsonCityPress.com

A Butler father has been indicted for injuring his child back in March.

According to a news release from the Elizabethton Police Department, Mathew Clemons, 29, 106 Cable Hollow Road, Butler, was charged with aggravated child abuse/neglect stemming from an incident March 13.

Clemons began watching his five-week-old daughter at 3 p.m. that day after her mother left for work

Around 6 p.m. Clemons called 911 reporting his daughter was having trouble breathing.

Elizabethton police and the Department of Children's Services began investigating the incident at Niswonger Children's Hospital on March 14.

The child was later taken to Vanderbilt Medical Center, where it was discovered she had life-threatening injuries that were "indicative of inflicted injury," according to the news release.

Investigators continued compiling evidence and these findings were presented to a grand jury this past Thursday. Grand jurors returned a true bill indicting Clemons.

He was taken Tuesday to the Carter County Detention Center, where he was being held on $100,000 bond.

Clemons will appear at the next available Criminal Court date.

Dad accused of punching, killing 2-week-old son won't face death penalty (High Point, North Carolina)

Wed, 05/08/2013 - 12:16
Another killer dad gets a break. Dad BRIAN JACK FRAZIER has allegedly confessed to punching the baby in the face because he cried while Daddy was playing his precious video games. Why mom is in jail is not really explained. Maybe another one of those cases where authorities assume that all moms have Magical Mommy powers that allow you to stop an enraged young male?

Father accused of punching, killing baby won’t face death penalty

May. 08, 2013 @ 10:31 AM Chanel Davis

HIGH POINT — A High Point man who police say killed his 2 -week-old son, after punching the baby in the face in an attempt to get him to be quiet, will not face the death penalty.

“There is not an aggravating factor in the case,” said High Point District Attorney Walt Jones during a Tuesday hearing on the case. “You just can’t ask for the death penalty in any first-degree murder case. You have to have an aggravating factor defined by statute, which means like a prior conviction, more than one person injured or against law enforcement, for example. None of those factors were available for this case.”

Brian Jack Frazier, 20, walked into the courtroom Tuesday in ankle and waist cuffs in a red jumpsuit. He listened while his lawyer, Dan Dolan, assistant capital defender, spoke to him, but never addressed the court.

Frazier is being held without bond on a charge of first-degree murder. The infant’s mother, Stefany Renee Ash, 20, is still in jail under a $1 million bond on a charge of first-degree murder and accessory after the fact to first-degree murder.

High Point police charged the parents of 2-week-old Khan Frazier after his lifeless body was found in the bassinet in the bedroom at a home on Kimery Drive in east High Point. The couple lived there with their two children and Ash’s father.

Prosecutors have said Frazier confessed his role in Khan’s death to detectives, detailing in a statement how he “snapped” and punched the baby in the face after the child cried while he was playing video games.

Authorities said Ash initially told detectives she found the baby unresponsive and was unaware of what happened to Khan. They said they later learned that the couple planned how to cover up the homicide for hours, possibly by hiding the body and claiming that the boy had been kidnapped.

The Guilford County Department of Social Services reportedly visited the home prior to the death of the infant boy.

The couple’s 15-month-old son, Kane Frazier, has been removed by child protective services and taken to Brenner’s Children Hospital in Winston-Salem.

Trial dates have not been set for the couple.

“We do not have a full-fledge report back from the medical examiner’s office yet, so we are not going to be able to proceed until we get the documents,” Jones said. “As soon as the medical examiner gets the blood tests back, we will be scheduling something after all that gets back in.”

Dad--with kids in truck--rams "estranged" wife's car off road (Cooper City, Florida)

Wed, 05/08/2013 - 10:52
Once again, we see why abusers should not have access to the children. This idiot could have seriously hurt or killed the kids with his stupid, childish antics.

Cooper City man runs estranged wife off road, police say

May 6, 2013|By Tonya Alanez, Sun Sentinel

PEMBROKE PINES — A Cooper City father has been jailed on charges of child abuse and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after using his truck — with his three children inside — to ram and run his estranged wife and her friend off the road in their vehicle, authorities say.

Umar Farooq, 40, had his bond set at $110,500 at a Monday morning court hearing. He is being held at Broward's Main Jail.

Farooq was arrested at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday. He and his wife are separated and in the process of getting a divorce, according to a police report. Farooq became angered when he saw his wife in a vehicle with a male friend on Flamingo Road near Johnson Street and "intentionally and willfully rammed" their vehicle with his truck for about 100 yards and ran them off the road, the report said.

The couple's three children were in the truck with Farooq, according to the report.

Farooq fled southbound on Flamingo Road. When he was pulled over in the 100 block of North Flamingo Road, his truck had paint on it from the victim's vehicle and the front right rim was damaged, the report said.

Farooq was also charged with driving with a suspended license, records show.

Lawsuit allges that CPS helped molester father gain, maintain custody (Orange County, California)

Attorney Unveils Suit Alleging Cover-up of Disgusting Child Abuse by DA, County Agency

By Matt Coker

Tue., May 7 2013 at 10:34 AM

A lead attorney in the Miramonte Elementary School child abuse case that broke in Los Angeles last year has turned his attention to the Orange County Social Services Agency. Brian Claypool accuses the agency's Child Protective Services (CPS) workers of "aiding and abetting the commission of child abuse and child endangerment."

He is scheduled to hold a press conference in the Orange County Social Services Agency Building this morning to demand a state Attorney General and U.S. Department of Justice audit and criminal investigation of CPS, as well as announce his federal civil rights lawsuit against the agency.

Claypool is to be joined by his client Ruby Dillon, the mother of a 7-year-old girl who was, the attorney claims, "legally kidnapped" by CPS "despite no reliable evidence to support removal of the little girl from her mom and repeated credible reports by the child and qualified medical experts of alleged sexual abuse by the father."

Getting the Social Services Agency's response to this will be difficult because officials cannot discuss specific clients. Claypool is under no such restrictions. In a very long email previewing today's 11:30 a.m. press conference, he says that:

•CPS willfully tracked and abducted the girl by "fabricating evidence," obstructing justice, committing perjury and routinely violating the law;

•CPS workers violated the 4th and 14th amendments to the Constitution, the grounds for his lawsuit; •California's Attorney General and the U.S. Department of Justice must "immediately undertake criminal investigations of the Orange County CPS to uncover a decade long custom and practice by the CPS of "child trafficking" for financial gain and criminal obstruction of justice, failing to report child abuse to law enforcement and aiding and abetting the commission of child abuse and child endangerment;

•Orange County's CPS must undergo a comprehensive audit;

•Orange County's district attorney must explain to the community why "crucial" search warrants were not issued "immediately after the little girl made credible reports of alleged sexual abuse by the father (including videotaping and photographs) and why criminal charges have not yet been levied against the father for the alleged sexual abuse and members of the CPS for aiding and abetting the abuse."

Claypool called Orange County CPS a "protected empire" that is motivated by $2.2 billion in state and federal funding based in part on the number of children adopted out of foster care. The attorney claims children are removed from homes they are living in lawfully to keep funding flowing.

He goes on to graphically detail repeated cases of alleged rape and molestation of the girl by her father, the CPS of botching its investigation of the abuse and the DA's office of covering this all up.

"It should be noted that the father of the minor is represented by a prominent lawyer Al Stokke, who is an ardent supporter of the Orange County district attorney," Claypool notes. "At no time did CPS ever intervene on behalf of the minor to inform the court (as is their fiduciary duty) about this pattern of suspected sexual abuse by the minor's father."

The attorney says the Tustin Police Department did remove the child from the father's home twice out of safety concerns after finding her stories credible but that she was not placed with her mother, who has no record of abuse. Instead, thanks to repeated intervention by CPS, the girl was returned to her father's "house of horrors," Claypool says.

Through his Claypool Law Firm, the attorney is also representing 15 children and 22 parents from LA's Miramonte case.

Dad charged with beating 6-year-old daughter with a belt blames her "thyroid condition" for bruising (Columbus, Ohio)

Tue, 05/07/2013 - 14:37
Thyroid? Are you kidding me? Thyroid disease runs in my family, so I am pretty familiar with the issues. I have never heard of bruising all over your body from a thyroid condition.

So I call bullsh**.

Dad is identified as BRANDON WALLIS. Notice that there is no mention of a mother in the home or anywhere in this story for that matter. What happened to Mom?

Defense claims thyroid condition caused bruising, not father's spanking

By TIM CHITWOOD

Defense attorneys for the former Little League coach accused of badly bruising his 6-year-old daughter with a belt claim the child has a thyroid condition that makes her bruise easily and may have got the injuries playing at a baseball field.

But the pediatrician who examined the girl in 2011 felt that explanation could not possibly explain the marks he saw on the child’s body: “These marks were something traumatic that happened to her,” said Dr. Mark Oliver of Rivertown Pediatrics.

He was among the first witnesses in the case against Brandon Wallis, whose accused of beating his daughter repeatedly with a belt in September 2011. He is charged with first-degree child cruelty.

Defense attorney William Kendrick pressed Oliver to say he could not “rule out” hypothyroidism as a factor in the girl’s bruising, but Oliver would not.

“In my professional opinion, I rule it out,” the physician emphasized.

The pediatrician examined Wallis' daughter on Sept. 11, 2011, the day after she was whipped while in her father's care.

He acknowledged he did not test the girl’s thyroid hormone levels while examining her bruises, but said he did not think such testing was warranted. The child showed no other symptoms those hormone levels were off, and she told him what had happened as soon as he asked, he said, quoting her saying, “I got spanked.” He asked with what. “A belt,” he said she replied.

As jurors saw photographs of broad, square, purple bruises on the girl’s buttocks, Oliver told them: “There are so many blows here that to me it all coalesced together.” The jury also saw images of linear marks on her lower back and thighs.

“This was worse than any spanking I had ever seen, in my opinion,” Oliver said.

He also testified that Wallis came to his office this past March to question him about the child’s thyroid condition, asking both whether elevated or lowered hormone levels could have caused the bruises. Oliver, who said he told Wallis then the girl’s thyroid condition wasn’t a factor, testified that to him Wallis seemed to be “reaching for things” and persisted in pursuing the thyroid angle. “I could go on,” the doctor said of Wallis’ questioning.

Wallis’ other attorney, Mark Shelnutt, promised in his opening statement to the jury today that the defense would show the whipping didn’t cause the injuries: “We’re going to prove to you there’s no way a belt caused these injuries,” he pledged.

He said that while the girl was with her father on Sept. 10, 2011, he took her to a Little League practice where she and other kids played upon a rocky slope and smacked each other with tree limbs, which could have caused some of her bruises.

Glen Allen father accused of exposing himself to children

By Ashley Monfort

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - A Henrico officer arrests a West End man and charges him with exposing himself to children.

Henrico Police say it happened at Randye C. Butcher Jr.'s home in the Wyndham neighborhood. NBC12 tried to catch up with him outside the Henrico Juvenile and Domestic Relations courthouse after his first court appearance. He covered his face with a paper as he walked out.

Butcher is now facing two felony charges of indecent liberties with a child under 15 years old. Officers say they had received complaints about Butcher the day before the arrest. They set up an investigation where the officer says, according to the criminal complaint, he actually witnessed Butcher in the act.

The officer writes it happened around 8 a.m. on Friday at Butcher's home on Fremont Drive.

We tried to see if he was home, but no answer. Numerous neighbors told NBC12 they were shocked, but no one wanted to talk about it on camera. Off-camera they did say the time this is around the same time children are going to school! Another neighbor says he saw police handcuff Butcher on Friday.

According to the criminal complaint, the officer says Butcher was standing in the doorway of his home naked. The officer writes that Butcher's genitals were exposed where two children an 11 year old and 14 year old girl could see.

The charge indicates Butcher was exposing himself with sexual intent.

"It's not criminal to accidentally expose yourself out the window or I guess picking up the newspaper," says NBC12 legal analyst Steve Benjamin. "But if you intentionally expose yourself and you do it for a sexual purpose then it becomes criminal and if you're exposing yourself to a child under the age of 15 then it's a felony."

Neighbors say Butcher has children. NBC12 did find his LinkedIn profile. He lists that he works in IT services.

According to court documents, Butcher is not allowed to be around other children between the ages of 11 and 14. It does say he can see his own children.

Benjamin says if found guilty of this charge a person can face up to 10 years in prison and would have to register as sex offender.

Butcher's next court date is set for June.

Dad zip-tied 4-year-old daughter to gate, then kicked her in the mouth (Wake County, North Carolina)

Tue, 05/07/2013 - 13:52
Notice that we have mention of dad GERALD SWINEHART and his "girlfriend"--but NO MENTION of this child's mother. What happened to Mom? Why does it not even occur to any reporter to ask this question in these cases? Did Daddy have custody? What?

Zip-Tied 4-Year-Old Bound To Baby Gate, Kicked By Father

Posted: May 7, 2013

A zip-tied 4-year-old was reportedly kicked by her father after she was bound to a baby gate.

North Carolina authorities explained that 26-year-old Gerald Swinehart secured his daughter to a safety gate with plastic ties before striking her in the face. Police said the little girl was struck with such force that her bottom teeth busted through her bottom lip.

Swinehart is believed to have zip-tied the 4-year-old before heading off to Florida with his girlfriend. The father is now facing charges of intentional child abuse inflicting serious physical injury.

Wake County Assistant District Attorney Jeff Cruden said Swinehart’s girlfriend took the child to a hospital for treatment before heading off to Florida. They checked the little girl in using a fake name.

Although the couple fled to Florida, they were eventually apprehended by police. Cruden explained that 28-year-old Marlaine Coffey was also charged with intentional child abuse inflicting serious physical injury. She is being held under a $50,000 bond, while Swinehart is in custody under a $100,000 bond. It’s unclear at moment if either party has attorneys.

It’s believed that the incident involving the zip-tied 4-year-old occurred earlier this year. Authorities explained that the child was taken into the custody of North Carolina social services on March 31. The condition of the little girl is currently unknown as of this writing.

A judge explained that he intends to keep track of Swinehart should he make bond. It’s believed that the father will be required to wear an ankle bracelet while he’s under house arrest.

While it’s unclear just how long the couple will spend behind bars if they are found guilty of the child abuse charges against them, it’s currently believed they could do serious time.

"A father just ax murdered his son."

This email appeared in my inbox last February.

The email's author had been warning me about judges in custody cases.

She said they refused to listen to parents and children – even when they had evidence they were in danger.

Sometimes, she said, the judges were even taking kids away from moms – just for trying to protecting their kids.

Unbelievable? I thought so , too.

She said if I didn't do something, more kids would die.

Then 9-year-old Matthew Hernandez was murdered.

Yes, with an axe.

While he slept on the couch.

His father is charged with the murder.

"I told you," my email friend wrote. "Why don't you believe me? "

By then, I did believe her.

I had read the clippings she sent, particularly the ones about the murder of Baby Wyatt.

That father had posted his death threats all over the internet.

The mother warned judge, who did nothing.

The father later shot Wyatt. Then himself.

I read about case after case in Family Court: Judges warned.

Mother's desperate pleas – ignored.

Children murdered.

Two fathers are on trial right now for murdering their kids in these kind of cases.

So when I heard about the funeral for the ax-murdered boy –9-year-old Matthew Hernandez -- I got in my car and headed north.

When I arrived, gospel music filled the large, empty Sacramento church.

Matthew's grandmother was draped over Matthew's casket, sobbing.

Right next to his Teddy bear.

Soon hundreds of friends, relatives and community members filled the pews. It was standing room only.

Matthew's young mother, Jessica, looked shattered.

She says she warned the judge her ex was dangerous. But he didn't listen.

The family says he didn't even investigate.

Matthew paid the price. I was so moved by Matthew's funeral, I wanted to find out how many other judges were warned before they handed over children to dangerous men.

I talked to several moms.

Many were too devastated to come on television.

But not Andrea Gallegos.

Andrea was brave enough to sit in front of our cameras and re-live the horror of having her 2-year-old son, Isaac, murdered.

She pleaded with the judge, John M. Pacheco, to look at the photos of Isaac's bruised body – proof that the father was abusing him.

The family says the Pacheco just tossed them aside.

Then turned to her, according to court transcripts, and told her she was "over reacting."

Then they say, he threatened to take her son away from her if she kept it up.

It must be confusing be a judge. Especially in these emotional custody cases.

But threatening to take away the son of a 23-year-old mother who is begging for help?

"That's what we do," Judge Pacheco said, according to the court transcript.

In context, it seems he meant that courts give the child to the parent who is most willing to cooperate with the court.

The next time little Isaac came home with bruises from his dad, the family told me they didn't know what to do – or who to turn to for help.

That's what this judge did. Silenced a family. And a child died.

I hope Judge Pacheco listens to Andrea this time.

I hope all Family Court judges listen.

Submitted by Martin Burns. Fox 11 Producer

It happens so often, they say, that they have a protest chant: Report abuse. Lose your child.

Dad charged with killing son, daughter (Tacoma, Washington)

Man Charged for Killing Son and Daughter

SUBMITTED By Exit133 Newswire at 4. May 2013, 06:13 :

TACOMA, WA – Today Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist charged Michael Patrick League, 69, with two counts of Murder in the First Degree. On March 24, 2013, the defendant shot his son, Dennis League, 46, and daughter, Danielle Faucett, 43. Later that day, his daughter died, while his son remained on life support. On March 25th the defendant was charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder. Dennis League died several days later which resulted in the filing of the second murder charge.

The defendant and his wife shared a home with their daughter, son, and the son’s six and seven-year-old boys. In the early morning of March 24, 2013, the defendant determined that killing his son, daughter, and himself was the only one way to resolve family issues. About an hour later, while everyone was asleep, he armed himself with his .22 caliber handgun. He entered his daughter’s bedroom, covered her head with a pillow, and shot her in the head. He then went downstairs, where his son was asleep on the couch, covered his head with the same pillow, and shot him in the head.

At about 3:27 a.m., the defendant called 911 and stated that he “shot his son and daughter in the head” and he “had committed a father’s worst sin.” He said his son was still moaning and he wanted to shoot him again. He was still armed and intended to shoot himself. A 911 dispatcher was able to keep the defendant on the line until Puyallup Police arrived at the residence. He was convinced to exit his home and the defendant was arrested.

Inside the home, officers found Dennis League and Danielle Faucett in different rooms of the house. Both suffered gunshot wounds to the head. They were breathing, but unresponsive, and were transported to the trauma center at Tacoma General Hospital. The defendant’s wife was apparently unaware of the shooting. She told police that awhile ago the defendant said, “I should just shoot ‘em, shoot us all.” She did not take the statement seriously at the time.

The two grandsons were found upstairs, asleep, and unharmed. They were transported to the Puyallup Police station, and then to Child Protective Services.

Charges are only allegations and a person is presumed innocent unless he or she is proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Dallas dad arrested after SWAT officers find home filled with filth

by REBECCA LOPEZ WFAA
Posted on May 3, 2013 at 7:00 PM Updated yesterday at 10:30 PM

DALLAS -- SWAT officers were sent to a home in the 2900 block of Marideen Avenue to look for weapons after a 16 year old in the house allegedly made threats on social media.

He referred to Adam Lanza, the shooter at Sandy Hook Elementary.

But, when officers went into the home, they didn’t find any weapons -- instead, they found deplorable living conditions.

In a search warrant affidavit, Dallas police say they found the home filled with “[...]trash, food waste, live insects, dead insects, rodent droppings, human waste, and other unidentified filth.

“All the cookware and eating utensils were filthy with food and insect deposits," the document continues. "The refrigerator contained rotting food, the cabinets did not have food in them, and the clothes washer smelled as if it contained vomit.”

Police arrested the head of the household, Ricardo Hernandez, and charged him with child endangerment. They say he put his teenage sons in jeopardy by making them live in terrible conditions.

The boys, ages 14 and 16, hadn't been to school in over two years, according to school records. The father told police the boys' mother had been deported, and wasn't there to care for the children.

The boys told police they stayed home and played video games. One of them said he hadn't taken a shower or bathed in two weeks.

Police believe that Hernandez placed his children in danger of getting infections and or an illness from living in the home.

Dad tells police he slept all day while toddler wandered for six hours; mom was at work (Peoria, Arizona)

Toddler found wandering neighborhood

 by Jason Volentine azfamily.com

Posted on May 4, 2013 at 6:36 AM Updated today at 6:40 AM

PEORIA, Ariz. -- The parents of a toddler found wandering a Valley neighborhood, barefoot, finally came forward to police more than six hours after the child disappeared from his home.

Peoria police said they got a call about the lost child from neighbors who found him in the Suncrest Mobile Home Park near 77th Avenue and Peoria Avenue.

The child had burns from the hot cement on his feet and a soiled diaper according to those who found him.

Police canvassed the entire mobile home park and surrounding neighborhoods knocking on doors and looking for the parents but didn't find anything.

After news reports on the child aired at 9:00 pm Friday night, the father came out of a trailer just down the street from where the little boy was found, claiming he had been asleep all day and that his toddler had somehow gotten out of his crib.

The child's mother came home from work about the same time the father had discovered him missing. She was in hysterics and crying uncontrollably as the father rushed her inside.

Police were at the home Friday night, talking to the parents to decide if their story shows this was truly an accident rather than something criminal.

For the time being the little boy remains in the custody of Child Protective Services.

Dad charged with child porn (Sacramento, California)

Elk Grove Father Faces Child Pornography Charges

May 3, 2013 10:14 PM

 Reporting Nick Janes

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — An Elk Grove father is behind bars in the Sacramento County Jail on charges of producing alleged child pornography using hidden cameras inside his own home.

Michael Gibson was arrested by members of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force Friday, and is set to appear in federal court on Monday.

Federal investigators began looking into the case, after a computer at the his residence allegedly linked to an online child pornography file-sharing network.

Friday, investigators revealed that a search warrant served Wednesday at Gibson’s home in the 9800 Block of Nature Trail Way resulted in recovery of a computer hard drive loaded with alleged child pornography. Authorities said they believe the married father himself created some of it using the hidden cameras.

Ted Matthews is a neighbor of the suspect. Matthews said, “It really is sick, you know, and I can’t even fathom the thought that’s my neighbor.”

Another neighbor says the arrest came a day after the family celebrated a birthday for one of two young sons.

Yvette Grandison, a neighbor, said, “I seen him pull in and they had all kinds of gifts in the back of their van, and the next morning, the cops were here.”

Authorities say they believe the married father himself created some of the child pornography uncovered using the hidden cameras.

Federal prosecutors say in court documents Gibson installed cameras in several bathrooms to record unsuspecting children going to the bathroom and showering.

The criminal complaint describes one of the videos found. The officer said in the complaint, “It appears as if Michael Gibson turns on the shower and then walks out. The girl then undresses and the camera angle is set in such a way that it captures the girl completely nude.”

Investigators also said they found “camera pens” in the home, devices that appeared like regular pens, with a camera lens hidden above the clip.

Neighbors in the quiet, upscale community describe Gibson as a nice guy. They sounded shocked to hear of the arrest.

Neighbor Cathy Middleton is concerned. She said, “My daughter used to babysit for them before she went to school but yeah I never would’ve suspected.”

Custodial dad found guilty of 1st-degree murder, arson in death of 7-year-old son (St. Joseph, Missouri)

Sat, 05/04/2013 - 06:06
This article makes it sound like this is a rare misstep by social services. In fact, this kind of f*** up is disturbingly common, especially with fathers. That's why so many murdered children have in fact had histories with DSS--all to no avail.

Once again, we see that this poor little boy's mother has been airbrushed out of existence, as if she had never lived. It seems pretty clear that killer dad TONY KING was custodial. But how and why? Does somebody not want to answer that?

http://stjoechannel.com/fulltext?nxd_id=341482

Update: We see it verified here that King was in fact a custodial father. This was in January:

According to police, King and his son’s mother had separated years ago, and he had custody of the boy.

Which once again illustrates one of our standard Dastardly Dad Axioms: A violent dad's status as a custodial father tends to get "lost" by the time the case goes to trial.

Jury Finds Bethany Father Guilty in Son's Death

By: Alan Van Zandt, Melinda Barrett Updated: May 2, 2013

(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) A Harrison County man has been convicted of first degree murder, arson and child abuse in the death of his 7-year-old son.

"We have a guilty verdict for a father who killed his son," says Johnathan Meyer, Harrison County prosecutor.

A Buchanan County jury reached the verdict in Tony King's trial around 1 o'clock Thursday.

Testimony came to a close Wednesday for the Bethany man who was accused of setting his home on fire last January with the boy, Jeremiah Lamm, inside.

"It's a terrible crime anytime a father takes the life of his own son and then tries to cover that crime with an arson," Meyer said.

A medical examiner testified that Lamm had been strangled and killed prior to the fire being set.

During the trial which began Monday, jurors also heard testimony from school officials in Bethany. They pointed out that they had suspected Lamm was being abused, but they never could link their suspicion to his father.

Lamm's teacher, principal and school counselor fought back tears as they recalled the 7-year-old coming to school with bruises and other injuries.

"It was getting close to dismissal time, and in my gut, I just had a feeling that I didn't want to send him home, I was so worried. I knelt down to him at his desk, and I looked in his eyes, and I said Jeremiah I love you so much. I want you to know that I care about you, and you deserve to have every person in your life treat you good," said Jamie Carter, first grader teacher at South Harrison Elementary.

The school's principal called the child abuse hotline in the weeks leading up to a fire at his home in Bethany on January 11, 2012.

King's attorneys brought in investigators from the Children's Division of the Division of Social Services who said they did visit his home and interviewed the boy.

The reports from DSS came back as good and the boy's stories seemed to add up with his injuries.

They also said King was always cooperative with them and allowed them in his home.

The trial was moved from Harrison County to Buchanan County following a change of venue request. Prosecutors say the community has been scarred by the entire ordeal.

"There's a lot of heartbreak," said Meyer. "I know people are talking about it a great deal. We know that Jerimiah was loved. There were a number of people who cared about him, teachers, family and friends. It's sad that he met the fate that he did."

Sentencing for King, who could face life in prison, will be next month.

Dad charged with abusing 5-month-old baby (St. Louis, Missouri)

Sat, 05/04/2013 - 05:53
This is a good example of why child abuse statistics are often misleading, and why the acts of mothers tend to be over-represented. More often that not, it's the father/boyfriend who is the violent perpetrator, while Mom is trashed for "failing" to stop an out-of-control enraged male--as if that was even possible in many cases. But both parents are dinged as child abusers.

Dad is identified as JOSHUA ANSON.

Alcoholic dads top list of child abusers (India)

Contrary to what the fathers rights folks keep insisting, this is the consistent story across all the reputable data.

Alcoholic fathers top as child abusers

 M. P. PRAVEEN

The incident in which a seven-year-old girl was allegedly tortured to death by her stepmother and father in Kozhikode has brought in to sharp focus the increasing incidents of child abuse by parents.

Abuse by the parents account for 20 per cent of the distress calls from children at the Childline centre in the district in a month.

Unlike the cruelty of stepmother that claimed the life of the innocent girl in Kozhikode, it’s alcoholic fathers who have emerged as the main villain for children in households in the district going by the calls received at the toll-free number of Childline.

“Drunk father beating up children is one of the complaints often heard. There have been instances where we have come across children who have run away from homes to escape such abuses,” Antony Jinoy, district Childline coordinator, told The Hindu.

Tales of abuses at home are increasingly being reported during the sessions organised by Childline in schools. When such incidents come to light, Childline officials visit the homes of the children concerned to talk parents out of abusing their children.

In many cases, parents mend their ways out of shame. “If the situation does not improve, then Childline initiates steps to move them to a children’s home through the Child Welfare Committee after securing their consent,” said Mr. Jinoy.

A victim of child abuse can be brought to the care of CWC by anyone. The district CWC holds sitting every Friday during which such cases are heard. On other days, the child can be produced before a member at his home or work place.

“The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act passed in 2012 holds out more stringent punitive measures against child abusers than the Juvenile Justice Act. Since it is more child-friendly, protecting the privacy and identity of victims, children are more forthcoming in reporting abuse,” said K.K. Shaju, member of district Child Welfare Committee (CWC).

Section 3 of the Act provides for a minimum punishment of seven years’ imprisonment, which may go up to life imprisonment. As per Section 5 of the Act, the punishment will be a minimum of 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment, which may extend to life imprisonment, and also fine for aggravated penetrative sexual assault by close relatives or law enforcers responsible for the protection of children.

Senior psychiatrist C.J. John said that though incidents of abuse emanating from neglect, cruelty, hatred and even an unwanted feeling towards children owing to gender issues and unexpected pregnancy are also being reported, the common variant that’s prevalent in the Malayali society is well-intended verbal abuse and physical abuse of children.

While good parenting calls for patience, the parents here often take the easy route of verbal and physical abuse to get their wards perform better and fulfil their dreams without having any idea of the mental and physical scars that it inflicts on them.

“We often talk about the need to abolish corporal punishment in schools forgetting the domestic situation. Hurtful and demoralizing comments and curses shatter the self-esteem of children whose accumulated anger result in revolt against parents at the first given opportunity,” Mr. John said.

Dad charged with seriously injuring 4-month-old son (Twin Falls, Idaho)

Fri, 05/03/2013 - 19:30
Dad is identified as MICHAEL THOMIS MORANVILLE.

Given that the rib fractures were in "advanced stages of healing," this is not the first time that this poor baby has been abused.

Even though Mom has not been charged with any wrongdoing, she has still lost the baby to foster care.

Twin Falls Father Charged with Injuring Baby

5 hours ago • By Alison Gene Smith

TWIN FALLS • A Twin Falls man was arrested after, police say, he seriously injured his infant son earlier this year.

Michael Thomis Moranville, 21, was arraigned in Twin Falls County 5th District Court on the charge of felony injury to a child and released on his own recognizance on Thursday.

On March 4, Twin Falls police were notified that Boise detectives were dispatched to St. Luke’s Medical Center in Boise for a 4-month-old Twin Falls child who was admitted into the pediatric intensive care unit for a brain bleed. Boise detectives also told Twin Falls police that an X-ray revealed that the child had two fractured ribs that were in advanced stages of healing.

The boy was brought to the hospital by his parents.

According to a police report, in an interview with detectives the boy’s father, Moranville, told police that on the evening of Dec. 23 he gave his son a bath at their home in the 1200 block of Twin Falls Loop in Twin Falls.

Moranville told police that he was holding the baby in his left arm while trying to remove the towel the baby was wrapped in with his right arm, the report states. Then, he told police, the baby made a movement that caused him to slip out of Moranville’s arms and fall to the floor, the report states. According to the report, Moranville said the baby may have hit a changing table shelf before hitting the carpeted floor.

Moranville told police that the baby cried for about 30 seconds and had no visible injuries.

The report states that although there were no visible injuries, the parents decided to take the baby to St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center to be checked out.

Moranville's wife told Boise police that medical staff then performed a CT scan on the baby and nothing of concern was found, the report states.

Moranville told police the baby began throwing up excessively between Dec. 29 and Jan. 11 and saw several doctors at St. Luke’s in Twin Falls and Boise.

After several appointments, nurses ordered a CT scan because the baby’s head began to grow abnormally, the father told police. The report states that the CT scan revealed that the baby had fluid in his brain.

Then, on March 5, Moranville and the baby’s mother took the boy to St. Luke’s in Boise where he was admitted and had surgery performed to relieve the pressure, the father told police. At that time doctors discovered the fractured ribs and became worried about child abuse, the report states.

In an interview with police on March 8, the report states, Moranville said that sometime between Jan. 15 and Jan. 18 he was having an argument with his wife. Moranville told police he grabbed the baby away from his wife but was not gentle with him. While walking away, Moranville told police, he squeezed his son too hard and the baby began to cry. According to the report, Moranville also admitted to shaking the baby for about 10 seconds. Moranville said the baby did not lose consciousness or act strangely, the report states.

“Mr. Moranville told me that he didn’t shake his son as if he meant to kill him because it was never his intention to hurt him,” officer Eric Barzee wrote in the report. “But after it happened, he realized he’d gone too far.”

Police also interviewed the baby’s mother. The report states that the 20-year-old woman said her husband gets frustrated and punches walls or furniture, but she had never seen him hurt their son.

On March 19, the baby was released from the Boise hospital and placed with foster parents.

A March 27 report by doctors states that the baby’s injuries are highly concerning and are consistent with the diagnosis of child abuse.

Twin Falls County prosecutors filed a case against Moranville on May 1. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 10.

Another case where Grandma, Daddy, and the murdered baby were in the home....but not Mom? What happened to Mom? Another custody/visitation situation? I looked at past articles in this paper, and NOT ONE mentions the mother of this infant. Why?

911 call details moments after father allegedly shot 5-month-old son

21-year-old Joshua Petersen is charged with aggravated murder.

The Salt Lake Tribune

First Published May 02 2013 04:44 pm • Updated 4 hours ago

The woman who called 911 was breathless as she gave the address to an American Fork home and told the dispatcher her emergency: her grandson had been shot in the head.

"Roll the cops, roll an ambulance," said the woman, who identifies herself only as "the grandma" to dispatchers. "Shots fired. A baby’s been hit in the head. Please come now. Please."

The baby, Ryker Petersen, was 5 months old on April 5 when police say his 21-year-old father, Joshua Petersen, shot him in the head in the basement of their home located near 500 East and 500 North.

During the 911 call — obtained by The Tribune through an open records request — the woman told the dispatcher that the baby’s father had tried to shoot himself and she can be heard telling someone, "You give me that gun."

Moments later, with the gun in the grandmother’s hands, and Ryker in his father’s arms, the woman told the dispatcher that she thought the 5-month-old had died, but then said he began breathing again.

"Ryker, Grandma’s here," the woman said. "Ryker, Grandma loves you with all my heart."

Throughout the phone call, a muffled male voice can be heard in the background, and when the woman asks the man why he did this, his voice can barely be heard in the background: "I wanted [inaudible] together."

Ryker was pronounced dead at a Salt Lake City hospital.

Petersen has since been charged in 4th District Court with aggravated murder, a first-degree felony. If convicted, Petersen could face the death penalty or up to life in prison. Whether prosecutors will seek the death penalty will be decided after Petersen is arraigned.

Petersen appeared in the Provo courthouse Monday, where he was supposed to decide whether to waive his right to a preliminary hearing. His attorney asked for a continuance, and another hearing was set for May 20.

Dad charged with abusing 11-year-old son (Tulsa, Oklahoma)

Fri, 05/03/2013 - 11:13
Who is the unnamed woman who was protesting the abuse? If it was the mother, wouldn't they say so?

Which makes me think it was NOT the mother. What happened to the mother? Is this yet another custody/visitation situation?

As usual, the mainstream media chooses to confuse the matter.

Dad is identified as SHANE ANDREW SODSAIKICH.

A Tulsa man was charged Thursday with abusing his 11-year-old son last week.

Shane Andrew Sodsaikich, 30, was charged in Tulsa County District Court with "child abuse by injury."

Police were called to Saint Francis Hospital late Friday after a doctor who examined the boy saw bruises on the child's hip and head, according to an arrest report.

A woman told police that she witnessed Sodsaikich pull the boy by the hair, push him to the ground and push his head into a wall, the report says.

The woman also said she yelled at Sodsaikich in an attempt to stop the abuse, the report states. Sodsaikich was booked into the Tulsa Jail on Saturday and remained there as of Thursday night.

Tulsa County Assistant District Attorney Sarah McAmis said Sodsaikich is the father of the child.

Boy (3) killed by dad

INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPERS

Durban - A father has been arrested in connection with the murder of his three-year-old son, who was stabbed while sleeping.

Wartburg detectives arrested the 25-year-old man at his Swayimane home on Wednesday night and he was expected to appear in the New Hanover Magistrate’s Court on Firday.

Police said he was found in possession of a blood-stained knife, believed to be the murder weapon.

The child had been asleep in the bedroom of his grandmother’s home with his four-year old sister, while his grandmother and aunt watched television in the next room. They heard screams coming from the bedroom and ran into the room to find the boy lying on the bed covered with blood.

“The family immediately rushed the child to hospital but he died from his injuries,” said police spokeswoman, Lieutenant Joey Jeevan. Family members who spoke to the media on Thursday, said that they were shocked and baffled.

“Why would a father kill his child like that? It is too painful to think about,” said the boy’s aunt.
