Fatalities at house fire ruled murder-suicide

Tuesday, April 16, 2013

By Jason E. Silvers

Officials have ruled a tragic incident that took place Wednesday, April 10, in rural Bourbon County a double murder-suicide.

A news release from the Bourbon County Sheriff's Office said Monday that while there are lab reports still pending, an investigation has determined the incident, which left three people dead, to be a double homicide/suicide.

The bodies of Terry Lynn Prestley, 30, and her 5-year-old daughter, Alivia Prestley, were found by investigators Thursday in the burned remains of a house at 688 240th St., victims of gunshot wounds. A third body, that of 30-year-old Donald "Bryce" Prestley, was found in a vehicle just south of the residence. All of the bodies were transported last week to Kansas City, Kan., for autopsies.

As a result of the investigation and autopsies, it was determined that the female in the residence, as well as the child, died as a result of a firearm. Donald Prestley was found to have died as a result of a self-inflicted injury, the release said.

Bourbon County Sheriff Ron Gray said Monday that Donald Prestley died from a gunshot, although Gray didn't know if the same gun was used in all three deaths. He declined to release what type of firearm was used. He said reports are preliminary and he has so far only received limited information on the case.

Investigators are currently in the process of completing the investigation and are still following up leads. Once the case is completed, it will be sent to the Bourbon County Attorney's Office for review, the release said.

Gray said he could not estimate when the investigation or lab reports would be complete.

"That could be weeks," he said. "Toxicology and other lab reports take awhile."

Gray said that at this point in the investigation, he has seen no indication that drugs and/or alcohol were involved in the deaths, although lab reports that are pending could indicate otherwise.

"I've seen no indication of that at all," he said. "Not that I'm aware of. I haven't been told anything like that."

Gray said he could also not comment on a possible motive or cause of the fire. That information could possibly be revealed after the investigation is complete. He said he has not yet spoken with the state fire marshal about the cause of the fire.

Given Donald "Bryce" Prestley's military background, post-traumatic stress disorder is an issue that is being looked into as part of the investigation. Gray said the true reason for the tragedy may never be known. "We're following up leads," he said.

"We may never know the reason why."

Gray said three dogs in the house also died, although he is not sure if the animals were killed by gunshots or if they died in the fire. He said he has not viewed any necropsy results for the animals.

Last Wednesday, units from Scott Township and Garland Rural Fire departments were dispatched to a structure fire in rural Bourbon County. Once the fire was extinguished, the bodies of an adult and child were discovered in the residence.

The sheriff's office asked for and received assistance from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office.

The family has requested that the public respect the privacy of the surviving daughter and family members, the release said.

Alivia Prestley was a student at the Christian Learning Center. Donald Prestley, a 2000 graduate of Fort Scott High School, served in the U.S. Army from 2000 to 2008, including one tour of duty in South Korea and three tours in Iraq. Terry Lynn Prestley, also a FSHS graduate, was a stay-at-home mother. The couple was married in 2003 in Miami, Okla., according to the Prestleys' obituary that appeared in Saturday's edition of The Tribune.

Following cremation, memorial services took place Monday at the Grace Baptist Tabernacle with memorials suggested to the Andon Prestley Scholarship fund and left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Two killed by Nandi dad buried as third dies

MONDAY, APRIL 15, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY BARRY SALIL

A third child attacked by an enraged father a week ago in Nandi died yesterday at Moi Teaching and Referral hospital where he had been in the Intensive Care unit suffering from multiple Panga wounds.

Master Kevin Kipchirchir, 10 circumbed to death as two of his brothers brutally killed by their father in the middle of the night while asleep, were being buried at Kamurguiwo village of Chepkumia location of Emgwen constituency.

Master Benard Kiprotich 15, Gedion Kiptoo 8, were pronounced dead at Kapsabet district hospital while Kipchirchir was transferred to MTRH in Eldoret for specialized treatment after the grisly attack that has shocked many people in Nandi county.

Their father Josiah Koech 48, a former prison warden, had earlier set upon his wife slashing her several times with a machete, however she escaped and lived to tell the story.

The two children were buried beside the grave of their father who was laid the previous day after he was lynched by an angry mob inside Kobujoi forest in south Nandi.

He had escaped after he brutally attacked members of his family to avoid being arrested as he had just completed another 7 year jail term handed to him after he was found guilty of murdering his nice aged 3 in 2005.

A somber mood engulfed the village during the burial as the mother of children, Agnes Koech narrated how her late husband looked an haunted man and in some occasions confessed of having executed innocent inmates while serving at Nakuru G.K. remand prison.

Emotions went high as villagers and neighbours questioned why parents were targeting their children recalling that three months ago, another villager Francis Yegon went berserk and killed his two children before hanging himself in the house his lifeless children lay.

Eliud Kipkemboi, 4 and his sister Sharon Jepkogei, 8 were hacked to death early this year at Kabaskei village in the neighbourhood after an attempt an attempt to kill his wife in cold blood aborted.

A local SDA priest Samuel Langat who presided over the burial of the children blamed widespread Satanism worship in the area. “this are all ritual killings, we have buried 6 children killed in the same circumstances and we must stop this acts.” The priest said.

Dad charged in beating death of infant son (Milwaukee, Wisconsin)

The dad is identified as DAVID ALLEN.

Father charged with child abuse after nine-month-old son dies

Posted on: 9:35 am, April 15, 2013, by Derica Williams, updated on: 07:45pm, April 15, 2013

MILWAUKEE (WITI) — A nine-month-old baby boy died on Friday, April 12th, six months after allegedly being abused by his father, David Allen.

According to officials, the infant suffered a severe head injury, multiple fractured ribs and a fractured wrist on October 4th, 2012. On October 6th, the infant was taken to the emergency room because he would not take his bottle and was lethargic. He was also reportedly very sleepy for several days.

A chest X-ray demonstrated multiple rib fractures and a head CT demonstrated subdural hemorrhages and cerebral edema. These injuries were deemed non-accidental trauma.

Following the incident, Allen was charged with two counts of child abuse – intentionally causing great bodily harm and one count of neglecting a child.

According to the criminal complaint, Allen admitted to holding the child against his chest and pressing his forearms against the baby’s ribcage — breaking them. Allen told police he was shaking the baby, but lost grip, and dropped the infant onto a concrete floor in the basement.

An autopsy performed on Saturday, April 13th attributes the cause of death to complications of blunt force injuries of the head.

“He was hurt real bad, so you feel bad for him. He was loved. The kids really loved him,” Scott Drankiewicz said.

Drankiewicz was a foster parent for the baby. He and his wife cared for and nurtured the child after he was allegedly intentionally abused by his father.

“He couldn’t see. He couldn’t hear. He basically was breathing. He was on a feeding tube,” Drankiewicz said.

“I could tell by the way he acted he was very impatient with the baby. We kept telling him — you have to be careful with the baby. He is frail. He is three months premature, and he is only two months old,” the baby’s Godfather said.

The baby’s Godfather says Allen and his family lived with him and never told anyone about the injuries — not even the child’s mother.

Drankiewicz says he knew the baby’s health was waning and is devastated the baby succumbed to his injuries.

“I feel sad for him. I feel really bad for him. I feel bad for his mom,” Drankiewicz said.

Custodial dad gets life sentence for beating death of 3-year-old son (Hamilton County, Ohio)

Mon, 04/15/2013 - 18:20
So if dad CHRISTOPHER DANGERFIELD is so low IQ, so "troubled," and so depressed, then why did they give him custody? These freaking "authorities" need to be made responsible for the crimes they set up. Sickening....

Notice that this is the second Cincinnati area dad convicted of child killing in the past two weeks.

http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20130415/NEWS0107/304150079/2nd-dead-child-2-weeks-second-life-sentence

2nd dead child in 2 weeks; second life sentence

Apr. 15, 2013 1:40 PM

Man imprisoned for killing son: Christopher Dangerfield was sent to prison for 25 years to life Monday for beating his son to death.

Written by Kimball Perry

For the second time in two weeks, a Hamilton County father received a life sentence for punching his child to death.

“I spent a large part of my life driven by anger,” Christopher Dangerfield said Monday. “I took out my pain on my son, Tyrese.”

Dangerfield, 50, escaped a potential death penalty by pleading guilty March 18 to murder. Dangerfield admitted his punched his 31/2-year-old son, Tyrese Short, to death in a Dec. 28, 2010, incident in their Walnut Hills home. Dangerfield was given custody of the child by the Hamilton County Department of Job & Family Services.

Last week, another man, Antrone Smith, was sent to prison for 15 years to life after being convicted of punching his son, Damarcus Jackson, and causing his death. Dangerfield’s son, Lionell Dangerfield, also was convicted last year of beating his 3-month-old daughter, Zhi Merah Binford, to death.

Dangerfield won custody of the child over his mother, Latawanda Short. In the time the child lived with his father, he suffered a broken leg, broken ribs, a broken thumb, and suffered a severe burn to his face and hands before the fatal beating that caused his stomach to be ripped apart and bleed to death.

“This is a case where I’d characterize Tyrese’s time with his father not as a life but as a long, slow death,” Assistant Hamilton County Prosecutor Mark Piepmeier said.

Last week, Piepmeier prosecuted Smith and another child death.

“We just shake our heads at how does this happen.”

Dangerfield’s attorneys said he suffered from depression and lower functioning IQ.

“He took it out on the person he cared about the most,” attorney Steve Wenke told Common Pleas Court Judge Robert Winkler. “He is a deeply troubled person. He was simply not equipped for it,” Wenke said.

The judge sent Dangerfield to prion for life, ineligible for parole for at least 25 years.

Custodial dad charged in torture death of 11-year-old daughter out on bond (Sarasota, Florida)

Mon, 04/15/2013 - 17:59
The killer daddy coddling just never stops, does it? The sicko father TORTURED this little girl virtually from the time he gained custody to the time she finally died, just three months later.

NOT explained is how he gained custody and who gave it to him. Notice that all that is slicked over with hardly any explanation. Why? Who is being protected here?

And for all that, he gets on on bond! And it's implied that he could still get supervised visitation with the surviving kids if the judge gives an okay. WTF?

Sicko daddy is identified as KENNETH STODDARD.

Father charged in daughter's death out on bond

By Gabrielle Russon
Published: Sunday, April 14, 2013 at 5:16 p.m.
Last Modified: Sunday, April 14, 2013 at 5:16 p.m.

SARASOTA - Kenneth Stoddard, who is charged with child abuse in his daughter's death, is out of jail on bond.

Under conditions of his $50,000 surety bond, Kenneth Stoddard, 35, cannot leave Sarasota or Manatee counties and must stay at his mother's house.

His daughter Melissa Stoddard, 11, died Dec. 17 from lack of oxygen to the brain.

Misty Stoddard, Melissa's stepmother who is facing the same aggravated child abuse with great bodily harm charge as her husband, is still lodged in the Sarasota County Jail and waiting for her trial date.

Under conditions of his $50,000 surety bond, Kenneth Stoddard, 35, cannot leave Sarasota or Manatee counties and must stay at his mother's house.

His jury trial is scheduled for July 1 in Sarasota County Circuit Court.

Melissa, 11, a student at Oak Park School, had been an autistic child who suffered at the hands of her care-givers, prosecutors allege.

Authorities said she had been tied to and forced to sleep on a plywood board, her mouth duct taped shut. Doctors found ligature marks on the girl's upper arms, wrists, ankles and thighs.

Melissa lost 40 pounds over a three-month period and sometimes ate on a blanket in what was dubbed the corral, a fenced area outside the family's Sarasota County house.

But Misty Stoddard's defense denied the allegations during a hearing in January.

Attorney David Taylor had said Melissa lost so much weight because of her mental health problems, not the Stoddards withholding food.

Melissa had moved from North Carolina, where she had lived with her biological mother, to Sarasota County to stay with her father and stepmother, Misty Stoddard, 36. The Stoddards had five children in the house and Misty Stoddard is now pregnant with a sixth.

The five children were placed in foster care.

The condition of Kenneth Stoddard's release is that he cannot have an unsupervised visits with children who are under 18 and no contact with children involved in the case without a judge's order.

"There appears to be extensive evidence that Melissa was being tortured, ridiculed and isolated for at least several weeks before she died," said a medial document that was included in the Sarasota Circuit Court records.

"This was emotionally abusive to both Melissa as well as the other children in the home who had to witness her horrible maltreatment."

Convicted child abuser dad sentenced for hurting second baby (Grand Haven, Michigan)

Mon, 04/15/2013 - 17:42
Somehow, sadistic piece of sh** doesn't even come close to describing dad RYAN KUPRES.

Father sentenced in child abuse case

Updated: Monday, 15 Apr 2013, 1:08 PM EDT

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) - An Ottawa County judge Monday morning described Ryan Kupres' actions as "beyond despicable…beyond outrageous," as the convicted child abuser was sentenced.

Kupres was convicted last month after violently shaking his 5-month-old child.

The judge expressed in court Monday that it was obvious Kupres, 28, enjoyed inflicting pain on his own children.

Judge Jon Hulsing ordered Kupres to spend 15 to 22 years in prison. Judge Hulsing went above the sentencing guidelines, giving Kupres more time behind bars than what is suggested for the crime.

"The jury got this case absolutely right. The court finds that words cannot adequately describe the crime you have committed against your children. Your repeated acts are beyond despicable, beyond reprehensible, and beyond outrageous. Because of that, the maximum sentence is not only justified, but demanded, in order to protect your children but society as a whole."

His daughter, Layla, was in serious condition for a few days in April 2012, but has since recovered and doesn't appear to have any lasting effects of her injuries.

This isn't the first time Kupres has been accused of child abuse. He pleaded no contest in 2008 to abusing another baby, his then 3-week-old son. That baby also sustained broken bones.

Dad murders four kids (Merced, California)

Sun, 04/14/2013 - 14:14
Once again, we have a deadbeat dad who killed the kids to "punish" mom for leaving his sorry @$$. Despite the bull crap from the fathers rights groups about "alienating" mothers, it is clear that Mom continued to include this moody "depressed" idiot at family birthdays and the like--only to be repaid like this. You can't please these emotional terrorists by granting them joint custody or catering to their every whim (the actual custody arrangement is not clarified here).

Notice that Daddy killed the step kids and his own biological offspring with equal indifference.

The killer dad is identified as JOHN HOGAN.

http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=125830&page=1

Ex-Husband Killed Woman's 4 Kids

Aug. 26

Christine McFadden seemed to have it all — a great career, a beautiful home, and four terrific children.

But her world collapsed around her when she returned from her morning walk on March 26. The 44-year-old Merced, Calif., veterinarian found her ex-husband's vehicle parked in the driveway, and the body of her daughter in the hallway. She fled to a neighbor's house to call police.

"This is Christine McFadden. I think my ex-husband has killed my children," McFadden said in a frantic call to 911, made available to Good Morning America.

"Talk to me. What's going on?" the operator said.

"I don't know. I walk in the house. I think my daughter is dead in the hallway," McFadden said. "I left … My ex-husband is John Hogan. You need several police. He's an ex-cop. But send someone, if they're still alive."

All four of her children were slain by McFadden's ex-husband. First, Hogan, 49, killed her sons from a previous marriage, 15-year-old Stanley Willis and 14-year-old Stuart Willis. Both boys were both found shot to death in their beds. Their sister, 17-year-old Melanie Willis, struggled with Hogan in the hallway, but he killed her, too.

Hogan brought little Michelle Hogan, the only of the four who was his biological child, to the master bedroom. He shot her in the torso, and then killed himself.

A Message Left One Clue

Hogan left only one clue as to why he went on the killing rampage.

At 6:33 that morning the former Santa Clara sheriff's deputy left his best friend a disturbing voice-mail message.

"I'm bankrupt, morally, physically, emotionally, monetarily. My body's gone, my mind is gone," Hogan said in the message. "I have nothing left."

The message angers and mystifies McFadden, who says she included her ex-husband in the children's birthdays and holidays after their divorce the previous year.

Now she must mark those occasions without her children. But the distraught mother has found that support from people in her community has helped the grieving process.

Hours after the murders, hundreds of people gathered at the local church, and later held a candlelight vigil.

At the funeral, more than 2,000 mourners gathered to pay their respects to her children: Melanie, the scholar; Stanley, the football star; Stuart, the soccer phenomenon; and Michelle, who wanted to be a veterinarian, just like her mom.

Five Months Later

Five months after the tragedy, McFadden says she cries every day and takes heavy medication as she struggles through the grief. The question of why the tragedy happened haunts her every day.

McFadden said her ex-husband was never physically abusive to the kids or her. He would sometimes lose his temper over small things, flare-ups that were marked by Hogan yelling and screaming profanities, but not demonstrating physical violence.

"There was never, never any threat," McFadden said on ABCNEWS' Good Morning America.

Hogan had been invited to Michelle's birthday party right before the murders, as he was invited to all the holidays, McFadden said.

All of the kids and their friends were there, and it was a beautiful day. Everyone else was happy, but Hogan sat in the corner by himself.

At the time, Hogan was not working regularly, had very little money, and was depressed. Meanwhile, McFadden had a successful and lucrative veterinary practice, owned an expensive home, and had custody of the four kids.

McFadden believes Hogan did not kill the children because he disliked or hated them, but simply as a way to strike back at her. He was angry with her because she was happy and successful.

Fulfilling Children’s Destinies

Now, she believes that her current reason to exist is to do the work that her children were destined to do.

Melanie, her teenage daughter, was a ballet dancer and had many close friends.

Stanley was a star athlete and a charmer, a favorite with the girls.

Stuart was a thoughtful child, who was just coming out of his shell. His soccer coach recently received a call from an Olympic scout who described a player he was interested in, and the coach had to explain that Stuart couldn't try out for the team, because he had been killed.

And Michelle was warm, loved everyone, and wanted to grow up to be just like her older sister and brothers. She loved being at the vet's office most of all.

Using contributions from people who sent her donations after the slayings, McFadden has set up a "friendship scholarship" for someone nominated by classmates who consider the applicant a wonderful, loyal friend. She says it's a tribute to her daughter Melanie, who had a wonderful group of friends. She is also setting up a project to add an addition to the University of California at Merced library, and a children's playroom for the new Mercy Hospital in Merced.

"I feel my children were such incredible people and I want the world to hear about them," McFadden said. "I want to memorialize them and to allow them to do for the world what I think they would have done to make their mark on the world."

Dad charged in 4-month-old daughter's death also accused of assault on second infant (Calgary, Canada)

Sun, 04/14/2013 - 07:11
Will the killer daddy coddling ever stop? This sh** has been charged with killing one baby and assaulting another four years later. Despite not showing up in court, he still gets bail! WTF???

Father charged in daughter’s death also accused of assault on second infant

BY STEPHANE MASSINON, CALGARY HERALD
APRIL 13, 2013

A Siksika man has been charged in the 2007 death of his four-month-old daughter, and aggravated assault against another four-month-old child in 2011.

Kinsey Gordon Jerry, 27, was the target of two police investigations — one by Calgary police and the other by RCMP — into severely injured infants.

Despite missing court last month and being wanted on a Canada-wide warrant, Jerry was granted bail Friday in a Calgary courtroom.

On Friday, the Calgary homicide unit said it has laid a manslaughter charge in the death of Honey Jerry.

Police say they were first called to the home Jerry briefly shared with the girl’s mother in the 400 block of Ranchlands Grove N.W. on Jan. 31, 2007, because the four-month-old girl was in medical distress. She was taken to hospital, but died March 7, 2007.

An autopsy on the girl concluded her death was a result of cranial trauma — what used to be referred to as “shaken baby syndrome.”

Police say a thorough investigation ensued, leading to the charge against Jerry.

“There was no indication that a weapon was involved,” said homicide unit Staff Sgt. Doug Andrus.

Saying the case was before the courts, he said he could not comment on motive or whether the father was alone with the child at the time.

Jerry was identified as a person of interest early in the investigation.

“He was interviewed by investigators at that time and he was co-operative with the investigators,” said Andrus.

Andrus said it remained an active investigation and said Calgary police were later contacted by RCMP about the same suspect.

On Sept. 26, 2011, Gleichen RCMP were called to a report of an injured child on the Siksika Nation. The baby was taken to the Alberta Children’s Hospital by STARS air ambulance with head trauma.

Jerry was arrested in March of this year but failed to appear in provincial court, and a Canada-wide arrest warrant was issued for his arrest. He turned himself in to police a week later.

RCMP Sgt. Jeff Simpson said he could not reveal the relationship between Jerry and the victim.

Asked about the severity of the injuries, Simpson said Jerry “was charged as a result of that incident with aggravated assault.”

Andrus said he could not speak about the RCMP’s investigation or whether the injury to the child could have been prevented.

“I can’t comment on another agency’s investigation and I can’t speculate. What I can tell you is we conducted a complete, thorough investigation, and in consultation with the Crown prosecutor’s office we were in a position where we could lay a charge,” said Andrus.

He said investigations into infant deaths are long and complex, and autopsy results can take a year. Another challenge is being able to prove the suspect had exclusive access to the child, he said.

Andrus said he did not believe the suspect had other children.

Published on 12/04/2013 07:25

A father who left his three-year-old child playing near a busy road while he drank with friends has been fined by magistrates.

Andrejs Samsonovs was told it was ‘unacceptable’ that he left his daughter running up and down the pavement on High Street, Boston, after he bumped into friends in the street on March 17.

The 33-year-old admitted being drunk in charge of a child when he appeared before Boston Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, and was given a £60 fine, £85 costs and a £20 surcharge.

Edward Johnson, prosecuting, said police had seen Samsonovs, of Skirbeck Road, Boston, along with a group of other people while they had been out on patrol at around 8am. They also spotted a child running around on the pavement, and the defendant said he was in charge of her.

He added: “He had a can of alcohol with him. The officer smelled alcohol on him and he appeared unsteady on his feet.”

In mitigation, David Lee said Samsonovs’ wife had been called to work and left him in charge of the child after he had been drinking the night before. He had met friends on the way back from the shop, he said.

An Oxford man is accused of hitting his infant son in the head, injuring the child.

According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, 21-year-old David W. Doornink was at home with his infant son Nov. 25, 2012, while the boy’s mother was at work. Police said that while Doornink was alone with the boy, he hit the child in the head with his open hand.

The boy’s mother observed bruising on the child’s head, but Doornink denied hitting him, police said.

The next day, the boy’s mother sent photos of the bruise to one of the boy’s grandparents. The grandparent then reported the injury to the Department of Human Services.

Police said the boy’s mother confronted Doornink again before a DHS worker and deputy sheriff arrived at their home. This time, Doornink admitted that he hit the boy, but said he had been attempting to swat a fly and missed, according to police.

The DHS worker and sheriff’s deputy had the boy transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics where an examination revealed a hand-shaped bruise and a hemorrhagic contusion on the boy’s brain.

Police said Doornink admitted to hitting the boy in a subsequent interview.

Doornink has been arrested and faces one count of child endangerment causing bodily injury, a class D felony. He remains in custody at the Johnson County Jail on a $7,500 cash-only bond.

Police: Baby in coma, dad admits to burning her with cigar and other abuse

By Amy Pavuk, Orlando Sentinel
2:20 p.m. EDT, April 12, 2013

A Central Florida baby girl was in a coma with bleeding in her brain Friday — injuries Apopka police say were caused by ongoing abuse at the hands of her father.

Police and paramedics received a call Thursday afternoon about a 1-year-old girl who was not breathing and had no signs of a pulse.

When rescuers arrived, the baby's 23-year-old father, Rony Veus, was performing CPR. Rescuers transported the baby to a local hospital, where staff told Apopka police they suspected child abuse.

According to Apopka police, Veus told authorities he has thoughts of harming his daughter and feels relieved when he causes her pain or discomfort.

Veus said he has pulled her hair, pushed her to the ground, thrown her on the bed, burned her with a cigar and forced her to eat cinnamon.

State child-welfare workers were called and are ensuring the safety of the baby, whose condition is listed as "guarded."

Apopka police arrested Veus on a count of aggravated battery. He remained at the Orange County Jail on Friday.

Dad arrested after toddlers found wandering the city at night (Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina)

Thu, 04/11/2013 - 13:50
I wonder if dad SEAN CAGLE is a single and/or custodial father. Notice that there is no mention of a mother in the home, and that the children are now with (unidentified) "appropriate caregivers" (not Mom?)

Wonder what happened to Mom? As often happens, the mother is erased from the story.

Toddlers found unattended in city, father faces abuse charges

Sean Cagle, of Roanoke Rapids, is facing child abuse charges after his toddlers were located unattended at two different parts of the city at night.

Posted: Thursday, April 11, 2013 2:44 pm | Updated: 2:51 pm, Thu Apr 11, 2013.

A Roanoke Rapids man is facing child abuse charges after his toddlers were located at night unattended at two different parts of the city.

Deputy Police Chief Tommy Hathaway said Officer Roy Ball responded to Chockoyotte Street in Roanoke Rapids at 8:39 p.m. Monday in response to a 2 year old that was unattended and almost hit by a vehicle.

“Officer Ball was able to locate the child, and a second report came in that a 1-year-old child was near Premier Boulevard with just a diaper on,” Hathaway said. “Officer Gerald Morris was able to locate that child.”

Through their investigation, according to Hathaway, the officers determined the children were related. The children’s father, Sean Cagle, of the 200 block of Chockoyotte Street, was taken into custody without incident and charged with two counts of child abuse.

He is free after posting a $5,000 bond. He was assigned a May 10 court date.

Hathaway said the Department of Social Services responded and placed the two children with appropriate caregivers.

Dad charged with domestic battery after young children found covered with bruises, welts (Chicago, Illinois)

Father charged after children found with bruises at South Side home

April 10, 2013|By Adam Sege | Tribune reporter
(WGN-TV)

The father of one of two young children found with bruises after police responded to a disturbance in the East Chatham neighborhood has been charged with domestic battery, authorities said.

Edwin Anderson, 28, was expected to appear in Domestic Violence Court for a bond hearing after police found a 1-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy with visible injuries at Anderson's home in the 8200 block of South Ellis Avenue, police said.

Officers were called to the home in the 8200 block of South Ellis Avenue around 9 p.m. Monday, Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said. A neighbor reported possible child abuse at the home, police said. Officers found four children, 4 years and younger, in the home. Two of them had bruises, Greer said.

Anderson fled the home out a back door before police arrived. Officers found the boy had brusing and welts, and the girl also showed marks, police said. Anderson was arrested when he returned, and police confiscated a black leather belt believed used to inflict the injuries.

All four children were taken to the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital, where they were listed in good condition. The children, three girls and a boy, range in age from 6 months to 4 years old, Greer said.

The children's mother was questioned by police but not charged, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is investigating allegations of child abuse against a man who is the boyfriend of the children's mother, DCFS spokesman Jimmie Whitelow said today. The mother is being investigated on allegations of neglect, he said.

No booking photo of Anderson was released because he wsa charged with a misdemeanor. Unlike most misdemansors, all domestic battery charges in Chicago, however, require a detendants's appearance for a bond hearing.

Dad gets 13 years for torturing 8-week-old son (Cambridge, England)

Father jailed for 13 years for torturing baby son

Written by GARETH MCPHERSON

A twisted father who broke two of his own baby’s bones and tried to rape his partner has been jailed for 13 years.

The defendant also caused his 8-week-old son serious internal injuries in an attack with a “large blunt instrument” at the family home in Cambridgeshire in April last year.

The man in his 20s was sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court this week for three horrific attacks on his defenceless son and the attempted rape and beating of the mother, who he controlled using intimidation and violence.

Members from both sides of the family wept as the prosecution described in graphic detail the injuries inflicted on the baby.

The full extent of the abuse was uncovered by the authorities when the infant was taken to hospital by ambulance after the mother woke up to find him bleeding on April 7 last year.

Experts from Addenbrooke’s found he had been attacked by a “large blunt instrument” - but did not know exactly what.

Claire Matthews, prosecuting, said the baby also suffered fractures to the left ulna, the elbow, and right tibia, which is in the leg, from his father.

She said: “They may be fractures of different ages and they would have required considerable force to cause them, far in excess of normal parental handling.”

The defendant admitted grievous bodily harm with intent and two counts of wounding to the infant.

He was found guilty of attempted rape and assault by beating in relation to his partner at a trial in February.

Judge Jonathan Haworth, sentencing him to 13 years, said they were “clearly grave offences”.

He said: “It does not need me to emphasise the seriousness of that level of injury to a young 8-week-old baby.”

Judge Haworth said the attempted rape on the woman in April 2011 was to “feed your own sexual appetite” and was “committed against a background of intimidation and violence”.

He added that the defendant offered little insight into how and why he attacked his child and was “particularly reticent” in explaining how the internal injuries occurred.

On the defendant’s dangerousness, Mark Shelley, defending, said: “Having no previous convictions, having had responsible jobs and people saying good things about him, he is not the sort of mad cat man who would be wandering around the streets with a knife in his hand.”

Telling the defendant he posed “a high risk of harm” to his family and those who he formed relationships with Judge Haworth said: “You patently qualify as a dangerous offender.”

The father is expected to be released on licence for the rest of his sentence after five years behind bars.

Speaking after the hearing the maternal grandfather of the baby said: “He did not get half enough. He would have killed that baby if he had a few more days.”

DS Lucy Mason, who investigated the case, said: “I have worked in child protection for 10 years and these were the worst injuries I have ever seen.

“The case is very distressing, particularly as it involved such a young child and we are pleased that he has recovered from those injuries and is now back in the care of his mother.

“We are pleased the offender has been brought to justice and is no longer part of the victims’ lives.”

The family cannot be identified for legal reasons.
