Body found in Los Angeles hotel water tank needs more tests

Fri, 02/22/2013 - 14:51
LOS ANGELES – More tests are needed to determine whether the young Canadian tourist whose body was found wedged in a water tank on top of a Los Angeles hotel was killed or the victim of a bizarre accident, authorities said.

An autopsy performed Thursday didn't provide definitive answers into the case of Elisa Lam of Vancouver, British Columbia. Police have called her death suspicious.

Coroner's officials will await toxicology tests before making a final determination.

Guest complaints about low water pressure prompted a maintenance worker to make the gruesome discovery on Tuesday in a water cistern atop the Cecil Hotel.

Before she died, hotel surveillance footage showed Lam inside an elevator pushing buttons and sticking her head out the doors, looking in both directions.

Guests at the time described the water as having a terrible taste. Water tested from the hotel didn't contain any live bacteria that would cause illness. More

South Africa names new head in Pistorius' murder investigation; previous investigator faces reinstated attempted murder charges

Thu, 02/21/2013 - 09:47
Prosecutors reinstated attempted murder charges against a policeman leading the murder investigation into Olympian Oscar Pistorius, in the latest twist in a case that threatens to bring down an athlete who was once an icon in South Africa.

The announcement that detective Hilton Botha faces reinstated charges in connection with a 2011 shooting incident came a day after he testified for the prosecution in Pistorius' bail hearing, and by all accounts bungled his appearance. He acknowledged Wednesday that nothing in Pistorius' account of the fatal Valentine's Day shooting of his girlfriend contradicted what police had discovered.

The spokeswoman for the nation's prosecutors urged that Botha be removed from the Pistorius case.

Pistorius, an Olympian whose lower legs were amputated when he was less than a year old, claims he mistook girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp for an intruder when he shot her in a locked bathroom in his home. More

Tue, 02/19/2013 - 10:20
DARIEN, Conn. – A New York television news anchor has been accused of choking his wife at their Connecticut home and threatening her even after police arrested him.

Police say they received a call Sunday morning from WCBS-TV anchor Rob Morrison's mother-in-law about what was going on at the couple's home in Darien. They say Morrison had been belligerent toward CBS financial news anchor Ashley Morrison throughout the night and wrapped his hands around her neck.

The arresting officers say they heard him threaten to do her more harm while they were processing him. They say she didn't seek medical attention.

Rob Morrison has posted $100,000 bond and is due in court Tuesday. He faces charges including strangulation and disorderly conduct. More

California man charged with raping woman he met on ChristianMingle.com

Tue, 02/19/2013 - 10:19
California police charged a man last week with raping a woman he met through a Christian dating site, and say he may have assaulted other women.

Officers arrested 37-year-old Sean Patrick Banks of Del Mar, Calif., on one count of burglary and two counts of sexual assault for raping the woman in her home in November, Fox5SanDiego.com reported.

Banks allegedly used the online name “Rarity” to contact the victim on ChristianMingle.com last November. He is accused of raping her while visiting her at home.

It took police several months to find Banks because he did not reveal his real name to the woman, who is in her 20s. Police say Banks also used the names “Rylan Butterwood” and “Rylan Harbough” on the dating site, Police Lt. Matt Nicholass told Fox5SanDiego.  More

Men accused of robbing friend at gunpoint for $1

Mon, 02/18/2013 - 13:32
Two men are accused of beating up a friend, robbing him at gunpoint and walking away with only a dollar found in the man's pocket.

Randy Chinonso Dike, 25, and Leonardo Taveras, 24, were arrested last Thursday for aggravated robbery after the incident on Feb. 10 at the 12700 block of Brant Rock, court records show.

A Houston man told investigators he received a call from Taveras, whom he knew by name, sight and voice, asking him to meet with him to help with his vehicle.

When he arrived, Taveras and Dike accused the man of burglarizing an apartment several months before, he told police. The man denied to investigators that he stole from Taveras' home.

Dike charged at the man and punched the man in the torso several times, court records show. Taveras then opened the trunk and took a shotgun out of his car parked at the scene and pointed it at the man, records show.  More

Oscar Pistorius murder charge: bloodied cricket bat found at Paralympic athlete's home

Sun, 02/17/2013 - 07:54
Police in South Africa are reportedly investigating the discovery of a bloodied cricket bat at the home of Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius.

Local reports stated police believe he may have used the bat to attack girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp before shooting her dead on St Valentine's Day morning.

Detectives are working on two other theories concerning the bat: that it was either used to break down the door of the bathroom where she hid, or that she used it to defend herself against Mr Pistorius, South Africa's City Press reported.

One bullet cartridge was found in the champion sprinter's bedroom and police are looking at whether he "chased" his girlfriend and fired the first shot before she locked herself in the bathroom and he fired three more through the door, the paper said.

It cited three sources "close to the high-profile investigation" who said the police had a "rock solid" case against South Africa's former golden boy.  More

Mother accused of helping teen daughter in fight

Sat, 02/16/2013 - 15:28
CINCINNATI, Ohio – A mother accused of helping her 15-year-old daughter beat another teenage girl at a Cincinnati high school last week is defending her actions and says that police and school officials have it all wrong.

Precious Allen, 31, told The Cincinnati Enquirer that the other teenage girl attacked her and her daughter last Thursday at Withrow High School, and that the teen was bigger and taller than both of them.

Allen, a mother of five, said she was talking to a teacher when the girl cursed at her and charged, and that she’s confident that school videos will prove her and her daughter’s innocence.

Police said that Allen burst into a classroom, held the other teen down and told her daughter to hit the girl in the face with a combination lock. The girl, who also was kicked and punched, suffered cuts and bruises, and police say that Allen’s daughter also gave a teacher a black eye.

Allen faces charges of felonious assault and trespassing. Full Article

Police believe he planned to resell the items.

While Harding was in the store, Target’s store security recognized him as having shoplifted from the store in the past, so they called police.

Blade Runner, Oscar Pistorius holds his head in his hands as he is formally charged with murdering his model girlfriend who 'was shot four times through bathroom door' at his home

Fri, 02/15/2013 - 05:05
Blade Runner Oscar Pistorius broke down in tears in court today as he was formally charged with the murder of his model girlfriend.

The Paralympic superstar held his head in his hands as one count of murder was read out to him in Pretoria Magistrates' Court this morning.

He did not enter a plea to the charge that he killed FHM cover girl Reeva Steenkamp, 29, in the early hours of Valentine's Day, but his family and management company later said he disputed the allegation 'in the strongest terms'.

Prosecutors told the court they would argue it was pre-meditated murder, a more serious charge than murder which carries a mandatory life sentence.

Overcome with emotion, Pistorius was comforted by his father, brother and sister as gasps were heard throughout the packed courtroom.

The hearing came as a picture emerged of the weapon, believed to be a 9amm pistol, allegedly used in the killing. It was seen in a clear plastic bag being carried by a police officer.

According to media reports in South Africa this morning, security guards at the complex found Pistorius by Steenkamp's body in the bathroom after she had been shot four times through the door.  More

Sugar Land Police Chief Burglarized: Conner Hinton, Taylor Nuttal Broke Into Chief's Home, Police Say

Fri, 02/15/2013 - 04:55
Sugar Land may be one of the safest cities in America, but that doesn't mean the Texas town's police chief doesn't see his share of action.

Two teens allegedly burglarized a home that turned out to be Sugar Land Police Chief Doug Brinkley's house just days after the fair city was ranked among the country's safest.

"They just chose my house," Brinkley, 48, told The Huffington Post. "I wouldn't want to see them end in prison for the rest of their lives, but unfortunable that's where they're heading with behavior like this,"

Brinkley was a mere five blocks away when Conner Hinton, 17, and Taylor Nuttal, 17, had their unfortunate encounter with the chief's home alarm system. Authorities arrested Hinton and Nuttal, and the unlucky pair eventually confessed, Brinkley said.  More

'BLADE RUNNER' GUNS DOWN GIRLFRIEND

Thu, 02/14/2013 - 07:30
South African paralympic star Oscar Pistorius has been charged with murder and is in custody after reportedly shooting his girlfriend dead in the middle of the night after mistaking her for a burglar.

Gunfire was heard inside his Pretoria mansion at 4am this morning and it is believed his partner may have been killed after a Valentine's Day surprise went tragically wrong.

The dead woman is Reeva Steenkamp, 30, a former FHM model who had been dating the 26-year-old for two months.

She was shot in the head, the chest and the arm, police have said, and Pistorius will appear in court tomorrow after a hearing scheduled for this afternoon was cancelled.

Pretoria police spokeswoman Denise Beukes confirmed he had been charged with murder, adding they had been called to his home on several occasions since 2011 to deal with 'allegations of a domestic nature'.

Just yesterday Miss Steenkamp spoke excitedly on Twitter about her plans for Valentine's Day.

She said: 'What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow??? #getexcited #ValentinesDay'

Replying to a follower, she later added: 'That sounds amazing! Wow that's what it's all about! It should be a day of love for everyone :) may it be blessed!'  More

West Palm Beach Man Accused of Illegal Butt Enhancements Arrested Again

Wed, 02/13/2013 - 04:57
For the second time in less than a month, a West Palm Beach man has been arrested on the charge he performed illegal butt enhancements, according to authorities.

Calvin Edward Butler, also known as Tamieka Butler, was arrested Tuesday after a fourth alleged victim came forward claiming they received illegal injections into their buttocks, according to WPTV.

Jail records showed Butler was being held on $100,000 bond early Thursday on the charge of practicing without a license resulting in bodily injury. It was unknown whether he has an attorney.

Butler, 44, who lists a Pahokee address, was arrested back in January on charges of unlicensed practice of health care causing serious bodily harm after he injected silicone into at least two patients' buttocks at a motel room, according to a Palm Beach Sheriff's Office arrest report.

The first alleged victim, a woman, told detectives in December that she received injections from Butler at the El Patio Motel four times between September and October, the report said.  More

Woman tells everyone she does not lock her doors

Tue, 02/12/2013 - 05:11
Pensylvania – Leaving the doors unlocked when you aren’t home isn’t a good idea, police say. Neither is telling people that you leave the doors unlocked, as one Bensalem homeowner recently learned.

The woman returned home to find that someone had entered her home between 8 and 9:30 a.m. and stolen more than half of a 90-count prescription for oxycodone, a prescription painkiller, $42 in single dollar bills and multiple credit cards from a dresser drawer, police said.

A neighbor told police that he saw a very skinny woman with long, dirty blond hair in the driveway of the home about 8:30 a.m. The woman appeared to be operating a blue or greenish older SUV.

The description sounded like someone familiar to the homeowner – a friend of her husband’s named Beth Ann Rivello (picture), 45, of Trevose.

When police interviewed Rivello at her home, she admitted stealing the items. Full Article

Authorities post $1 million reward for ex-Los Angeles policeman

Mon, 02/11/2013 - 07:44
A record $1 million reward was posted on Sunday for information leading to the capture of a fugitive former Los Angeles cop suspected of targeting police officers and their families in three killings committed in retaliation for his 2008 firing.

Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck said the reward, raised in part from private donations, police unions and contributions from businesses, marks the biggest sum ever offered in Southern California in a criminal investigation.

The reward was posted as law enforcement agencies across the region pressed their search for the suspect, ex-LAPD officer and U.S. Navy reservist Christopher Dorner, 33, for a fourth day. Beck described it as the largest manhunt ever mounted in the Los Angeles area.

He called the spate of revenge-driven killings Dorner is suspected of unleashing "an act of domestic terrorism," adding, "This is a man who has targeted those who we entrust to protect the public. His actions cannot go unanswered."  Full Article

‘The Sea Hag’ fatally shot a man over a beer – 30 years in prison

Sat, 02/09/2013 - 07:52
Florida – Former Conch Key resident Carolyn Dukeshire has the next 30 years to think about the can of Busch Light beer she never got from neighbor Martin Mazur.

That’s the reason Dukeshire, 62, shot and killed Mazur, 64, last July 29 — she asked Mazur for a beer and he said no.

That’s when she shot him five times outside his Conch Key home at 53 N. Conch Ave. It was a little after 7 p.m. Mazur later was pronounced dead at Fishermen’s Community Hospital.

Dukeshire — known by her friends and co-workers as the Seahag — pleaded guilty to second-degree murder Thursday, accepting an agreement with the State Attorney’s Office for a maximum 30 years in prison. Assistant Public Defender Patrick Stevens represented her.

A grand jury handed down a first-degree murder charge against Dukeshire in August. Full Article
