Missing 19-year-old Katelin Akens disappeared from the same town on the same weekend that 21-year-old Heather Ciccone was lured from home and shot dead in her vehicle…
Authorities in Spotsylvania Virginia don’t believe the two matters are necessarily connected, although they’re treating Akens’ missing persons case as “suspicious” pending further investigation.
No one has seen or heard from the young lady since her stepdad allegedly dropped her off at an area mall on Saturday, December 5th.
From there she was to board a commuter train to catch a flight out of Reagan National Airport to Arizona, where she presently lives. But Akens never followed through on either plan, it seems.
Fears for Katelin Aken’s safety and fate were further aroused on Monday when her luggage and personal effects -- including a wallet, credit cards and glasses -- were found dumped in a ditch not far from her last known location.
A police spokesman in Virginia said none of the contents of that suitcase were “tampered with” and suggested the teenager might have simply changed her mind about going back home.
This type of scenario “has happened before” with other similar 'missing' people, he noted.
It does not explain, however, why the avid text-messager hasn’t contacted any of her family or friends since vanishing over a week ago, or that all calls to her cell phone go directly to voicemail.
Katelin Michelle Akens is approximately 5-foot-4 and 120 pounds with short cropped hair, piercings and tattoos. Anyone who knows of her current whereabouts is asked to alert the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office at 540-582-7115.
