Are New Yorkers Going Insane?

Nov 13, 2015

New York City residents suffer from mental illness at the rate of one in five, according to a survey conducted this year by the city’s Department of Health.

“Major depressive disorder is the single greatest source of disability in NYC,” the agency also determined. “Yet less than 40-percent report receiving care for it.”

Those findings are alarming law enforcement officials too, since an increase in the mentally-disturbed seems to directly correlate to a recent spike in violent crimes -- including ones committed by juveniles.

In fact, incidences of youth-on-youth brutality are steadily climbing throughout the United States, with many of those offenses involving multiple fatalities.

Nationwide, though, America is experiencing an uptick of violence of every variety and from every sector of the populace; a trend that seems to be coinciding with an epidemic of drug abuse, overdoses, and suicides.

Interestingly, scientists in Finland just published the results of a 12-year study showing high rates of aggression and homicide for users of many popular painkillers, sedatives and antidepressants.
