Chilean officials claim a junkyard dog named Reina rescued a starving toddler this month in the impoverished port of Arica by breastfeeding the boy.
Police informed the Associated Press that witnesses contacted them on Thursday about a female canine acting as the wet nurse to a naked, malnourished 2-year-old on the back lot of an auto-repair facility.
The hungry waif was located by officers, rushed to a nearby hospital, then placed into protective custody with a local child welfare agency 24 hours later.
A spokesman for Chile’s national police also confirmed to the AP that the boy’s intoxicated mother eventually, albeit belatedly, did show up at the hospital to inquire about her son.
The unnamed woman was not arrested for neglect though, he stated, but instead has been put on notice to appear at a family court hearing scheduled for the end of the month.
The contemporary Romulus and Remus tale of survival has understandably captured international attention.
