A Washington DC shooter has just been “neutralized” and the nation’s capitol building is in major lockdown mode now, as police search the government compound for additional suspects and isolate a suspicious package.
NBC News is on the scene at the moment and reports that the U.S. Senate’s Sergeant at Arms Office is conducting a wide sweep of the building and grounds, amid talk of a related suicide on the 100 block of Pennsylvania Avenue.
No one is being allowed to either exit or enter the facility.
The parcel in question is actually said to be a suitcase, according to the Associated Press, and was spotted on the lower West Terrace of the U.S. capitol at around the same time gunfire erupted in that locale.
Neither the identity of the DC shooter nor an alleged motive for the attack has been revealed yet, as the investigation is still underway, but a spokesperson for the Capitol Police has already stated “it’s not an act of terrorism.”
As well, no definition of what “neutralized” might mean in this case has been offered, either -- rumor has it though that the unknown gunman killed himself during the shootout.
