Cop Shot Ohio Tot: Mommy, am I going to die?

Oct 10, 2015

A nervous cop shot a toddler yesterday at her Columbus Ohio home after being summoned there for a medical emergency.

The 4-year-old girl’s mother Andrea Ellis had cut herself on broken glass and a relative hailed the officer for assistance, after first contacting a 911 dispatcher.

“She's bleeding all over the place,” the woman explained in her 911 call. “I need a paramedic!”

Initially, it seemed lucky that a patrolman was already in the neighborhood, but that quickly turned to misfortune when the panicked family dog lunged at him as he approached the front door of the Ellis residence.

The startled officer then drew his firearm and fired at the terrier, missing the dog but accidentally shooting 4-year-old Ava Ellis instead.

Seconds later another desperate-sounding 911 was made: “My neighbor across the street had an officer at her door and she's screaming that he shot a child.”

The toddler was struck in the leg and required surgery for a shattered bone.

Ava is on the mend today, her mother said, but the potentially deadly confrontation remains “under investigation.”
