The rate at which the Department of Children and Families in Massachusetts is trying to snatch kids from their parents has been skyrocketing.
About 350 such custody petitions were filed in September alone, concluding a summer spree that saw almost 1000 cases of guardians summoned to family court on accusations they were inept at parenting.
The troubling 8-percent spike comes in the wake of the Bella Bond tragedy and other similar cases where the DCF knew “or should have known” about infants, toddlers and teens living in life-threatening conditions.
Under the auspices of child welfare agents, Bella completely disappeared from radar, only to show up earlier this spring as Deer Island’s dead ‘Baby Doe’ victim -- left there in a garbage bag, after having been beaten to death by her abusive mom’s demented boyfriend.
The murdered girl was only 2-years-old and one of hundreds of endangered youngsters that Massachusetts’ caseworkers systematically neglected to protect in 2015.
Now, as the year comes to a close, it would seem the DCF is trying to make up for lost time … and lost innocents.
