Debris from Missing Plane Spotted in Reservoir - New York

Nov 20, 2015

NY State Police say they’ve spotted debris from a private plane that mysteriously disappeared from radar yesterday afternoon on approaching a Connecticut landing strip.

The 1971 Cessna is still considered missing, however, until investigators can confirm the wreckage they’ve discovered in nearby Westchester County is actually the downed craft.

Searchers have no idea how many people were aboard the single-engine plane when it lost contact with traffic controllers at Danbury Airport at roughly 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.

It’s also not clear what kind of difficulties the pilot may have encountered, although, statistically, aircraft are most vulnerable to catastrophic failure when either descending or taking off.

Police divers were seen scouring the Titicus Reservoir for survivors and debris until the early morning hours today, but briefly discontinued those efforts until heavy fog had dissipated from the area.

Officers from the Department of Environmental Protection are assisting with that ongoing recovery operation.
