Police arrested the hammer man responsible for randomly attacking at least four people this week in New York City.
The perpetrator was apprehended in the midst of a fifth known assault -- this time on a female police officer -- and was shot by the victim’s partner.
Surveillance footage shows he struck the patrolwoman with his hammer three times before being taken down and cuffed.
An NYPD spokesman says the suspect in custody is 30-year-old David Baril of the Bronx, and the motive for the brutal crime spree may simply be that he’s mentally ill.
Baril checked himself out of a psychiatric facility in December, but allegedly has a lifelong history of paranoid behavior and has been diagnosed with schizophrenia.
The hammer man is being treated now for two bullet wounds and is listed in stable condition, but will be facing an array of assault and weapon charges for his weird crimes once he recovers.
It’s not known if he has a lawyer yet.
