A Vermont judge dismissed criminal charges against actor Randy Quaid and his wife this week, after the pair was arrested for making an “illegal” border crossing into her state.

The couple was intercepted by guards at the Canadian border and taken into U.S. custody on outstanding warrants issued by California.

The Quaids were accused in 2010 of vandalizing and squatting in a Santa Barbara property they had once owned and promptly fled to Canada to avoid prosecution.

Upon their arrest last weekend for allegedly reentering the United States unlawfully so they could “visit a sick relative” in Vermont they were jailed in lieu of $500-million bond.

But the Court hearing the matter not only determined their bail amount “was excessive” but that holding the Quaids on California charges and a pending extradition request had little or no merit as well.

After just a few minutes into Thursday’s proceeding -- and a short recess to discuss the matter off record -- Judge Alison Arms threw the criminal case out, ordering prison officials to immediately and unconditionally release Randy Quaid and his wife.

According to a jail report, while briefly incarcerated in St. Albans Vermont, Evi Quaid was obscenely assaulted by another inmate in a “traumatizing” incident that involved “feces.”
