Police say the seriously inebriated 22-year-old was setting off fireworks at a Fourth of July celebration in Calais Maine, when he stupidly decided to place a mortar tube atop his head and light it.
The device exploded, blowing Devon Staples to smithereens like a hand grenade.
His Darwinian demise by rocket’s red glare is the only such fatality reported in that state during the holiday weekend, officials claim.
Statewide, however, there were scores of firework-related injuries ranging from grave to relatively minor.
Maine only legalized the sale of fireworks to the public in 2012, after repealing a ban that was in place for more than six decades.
