The search for Anjelica Hadsell, missing since March 2, 2015, has come to a sad end this week, upon the discovery of a shallow grave with fresh human remains in it.
The 18-year-old college student abruptly vanished without a trace from her Norfolk, Virginia family home under extremely questionable circumstances, and hadn't been seen or heard from since.
That ultimately led investigators to jail the missing teen’s own stepfather, Wesley Hadsell, for obstructing their inquiry into her whereabouts and, thereafter, made the 36-year-old ex-convict the subject of widespread suspicion.
Today, Wes Hadsell remains in jail on numerous related criminal counts, as the investigation into his stepdaughter’s unusual absence progresses now without his active interference.
The human remains found yesterday buried behind a house in rural Southampton County, Virginia were sent to the Chief Medical Examiner to be autopsied and were formally identified this morning as that of AJ Hadsell.
The cause of death was not immediately evident, police said, but the discovery has prompted the FBI to lend some assistance in solving the Anjelica Hadsell missing person case.
Earlier in the week, a grandparent of the missing girl outright accused local officials of "doing nothing" to help find her grandchild, a charge which police either refused to comment on or vehemently denied.
The timing of their grisly find then is therefore notable, in light of the recent controversy.
(Updated on April 11, 2015, to include positive ID of victim as Anjelica "AJ" Hadsell)
