Nine brains found beside railroad tracks in a rural upstate New York county touched off fears in the local populace that a serial killer might be lurking near their village.
Turns out though, the piles of gray matter were dog brains, or sheep brains, or those of similar research animals -- at least that’s the determination of police and an area veterinarian called in to make an evaluation.
"We measured and weighed the specimen,” said animal vet Tim Monroe. “It comes out to about 70 grams, which would be consistent with a dog-sized brain," he assured, adding that whoever had performed the surgical removals had done so with great skill and care.
Previous to being unceremoniously discarded, the items had as well been soaking for awhile in formaldehyde.
Those conclusions have investigators convinced therefore that the nine brains just got separated during transit somehow, and that they likely had been headed to or from a hospital or university.
Police still have no idea, however, as to how the “well preserved” organs came to be alongside the railway tracks and who is ultimately and legally responsible for them.
The startled person who stumbled upon the nine small brains while walking their own pooch on Wednesday is not quite over the grisly find, and suspects that they may have been tossed there in effort to upset townsfolk.
"We think somebody threw them off the train. It goes by quite often,” said another local. “It’s just a sick prank somebody did. They’ll probably never find who did it.”
Probably not. But if the perpetrator is discovered, then they’ll face an array of misdemeanor charges for the gruesome stunt, including destruction of private property.
