More People in Oceans, Not Sharks (graphic images)

Experts say there are more people in oceans, not sharks, which has lead to the recent spate of encounters that are costing some swimmers an arm and a leg, and others their lives.

As with many large life forms now, including underwater ones, shark populations are steadily dwindling too, while mankind’s numbers, already in the multibillions, continue to perilously swell.

And global climate change -- which is ultimately dooming all things great and small -- isn’t helping to correct this unnatural imbalance.

In fact, several overhunted and crowded-out shark breeds, such as the Hammerhead, the Dogfish and even the Great White, are either critically endangered or on the brink of extinction, believe it or not.

So the mass hysteria caused by the latest handful of attacks on beachgoers is only serving to expedite their sad fate, as panicked people seeking revenge begin arbitrarily killing the dreaded fish.

over 100,000,000 sharks are slaughtered each year, some just for their fins

According to marine biologists and conservation activists, more than 100-million of these apex predators are slaughtered by commercial and recreational fishing every year, or an estimated 10,000 per hour.

Truly grim statistics that help to explain why, these days, there are more people in oceans, not sharks.
