Police are responding to shots fired at Walter Reed Medical Center in Bethesda Maryland today, according to live tweets.
A short while ago an unidentified individual told a 911 dispatcher they could hear gunfire echoing from Building 1 in the large Naval facility.
The county police department then notified federal law enforcement agents for additional support.
The U.S. medical complex is reportedly in lockdown mode now as occupants shelter-in-place “out of an abundance of caution” while the incident is being investigated.
A Navy press release states that “all base personnel are sheltering in place as a result of unconfirmed reports of an active shooter … the DOD Security Force, NIH Police Force, and County EMS and Medics have responded and [are] searching the area."
However, no official has yet confirmed the presence of a gunman inside or on the grounds, nor whether reports of shots fired in Walter Reed were a false alarm.
