An uncommonly cruel cancer doc who “misused” his practice and prestige "because of power and greed" has been given only 45 years of a possible 175-year prison sentence, over the objections of some 550 people he victimized.
Wealthy oncologist Farid Fata had remained calm and quiet throughout his trial for fraudulently subjecting patients to expensive cancer treatments -- most of whom didn’t have cancer and who were permanently injured or even died as a result -- but he sobbed when the judge sentenced him to serve the rest of his life in jail.
The 50-year-old also bilked tens of millions of dollars from health insurers and government subsidy programs like Medicare; charging the agencies for procedures patients never needed in the first place, including over 9000 injections, infusions and prescriptions.
His bogus but costly cancer *cures* put perfectly healthy people at risk and often involved appallingly high doses of extremely toxic drugs which sickened many and even permanently maimed or killed others.
Some patients were completely bankrupted as well.
"This is a huge, horrific series of criminal acts that were committed by the defendant," US District judge Paul Borman admonished, when issuing the 45-year sentence this week in a Detroit courtroom.
Devil Doc has already served two years in jail after pleading guilty in 2013 for criminal fraud, money laundering and medical malpractice, but he could get additional time off his jail term for “good behavior.”
The prosecution and Fata’s many victims were demanding 175 years for the heartless crimes he committed, and they expressed dismay at what they felt was far too lenient sentencing.
Lawyers for the Lebanese-born former physician argued for significantly less than 45 years, however. An appeal is therefore expected.
