Hungary’s mean-spirited camerawoman has been sacked by the TV station she works for, only a day after images of her kicking and tripping refugees while filming them went viral.
The abusive videographer, who until this week was employed by the right-leaning news agency N1TV, has since been identified as Petra Laszlo.
“The camerawoman's employment contract has been terminated with immediate effect as of today,” the station’s editorial manager announced in a tersely-worded Facebook update. “We consider the matter closed.”
Hungarian officials and agencies have been widely criticized for attempting to hinder -- instead of aiding -- tens of thousands of asylum-seekers desperate to cross their borders en route to Germany and beyond.
An impoverished country itself, Hungary has extremely limited means with which to accommodate the massive wave of displaced persons its daily being confronted with. So the beleaguered nation is due some sympathy itself.
However, allocating any of those scant resources on herding and harassing refugees in flight via mobs of armed police officers and coldhearted reporters does seem like an unwarranted expenditure…
