Arizona police investigating a spate of freeway shootings near Phoenix this month descended en masse on a local convenient store yesterday and took a 19-year-old suspect into custody for questioning.
The unidentified youth’s arrest follows nearly a dozen reports by highway motorists that they’d been shot at -- or their vehicles hit by projectiles -- in a spree that began in the last days of August.
The majority of those attacks have occurred on Interstate-10 and involved actual bullets; up to three were said to have been either BBs or similarly small ammunition.
Arizona’s Department of Public Safety was involved in the investigation.
Officials believe there may be multiple snipers with differing motives and MOs, giving rise to fears about “copycats.”
The current serial freeway shooter suspect is being jailed this weekend "on unrelated charges.”
