Officer Down Shooter Caught (NYPD)

May 3, 2015

While an officer down in New York City over the weekend continues to be hospitalized, his shooter has finally been apprehended.

Late last night in the borough of Queens, two plainclothes police in an unmarked squad car were fired upon when they attempted to question an individual carrying a suspicious object in his belt.

It turned out to be a gun.

Officer Brian Moore, 25, took a bullet in the head and was rushed to Jamaica Medical Center. His unharmed partner, Erik Jansen, 30, radioed in the surprise assault setting off a massive manhunt for the 35-year-old suspect Demetrius Blackwell.

Moore’s shooter, caught several hours later near the crime scene, has an extensive criminal record which includes weapons charges and armed robbery.

His is the fifth such attack on an NYPD officer in as many months -- some of which have been fatal -- underscoring the dangerous climate police are now operating in, and which is making them targets of violent crime as well.

The condition of the latest officer down has not been released, but a spokesperson from his precinct indicated there was reason to be hopeful.
