Police probing an apparent natural death yesterday uncovered an enormous arsenal stashed in the decomposed dead man’s Pacific Palisades home.
"Our truck couldn't carry it all," said LAPD commander Andrew Smith. "We had to go back and make another trip."
That means now investigators not only have to determine why the heavily-armed stiff was rotting in a vehicle parked near his residence, but what he had intended to do with 1200 guns and two tons of ammo.
There was no sign of foul play and he had no known criminal history, either. Although whether the deceased man might have been using aliases and if all of his rifles, shotguns and pistols -- most of which had never been fired -- were legal are two outstanding issues yet to be determined.
"We have a lot of work to do," Smith acknowledged. "Running the background, history and legality of these weapons is going to require a tremendous amount of time."
He also noted that, so long as every item in the arsenal is clean, it isn’t a crime to arm oneself to the gills like that.
It’s just extremely suspicious.
