Patrick Kane Sex Assault Case: Was Rape Kit Tampered With?

Sep 24, 2015

The Patrick Kane sex assault case is becoming stranger and stranger, as a lawyer for his alleged victim announced yesterday that part of her rape kit was mysteriously left at her mom’s doorstep.

Patrick Kane Sex Assault Case: Was Rape Kit Tampered With?

“Something seriously has gone amiss,” attorney Thomas Eoannou said, as he presented the frayed lab-envelope to reporters as proof of evidence tampering. “I have, obviously, grave concerns as to what's going on here.”

Blackhawks star player Kane is accused of forcibly violating a young woman at his upstate NY mansion this summer.

She reported the attack immediately and a rape kit was processed that attorneys for Kane later asserted showed their client’s DNA was found “only” above her waistline, but “none from the waist down.”

That kit and all its elements was to then be stored intact at the police department in the event of a criminal trial; not separated and parts of it tucked into somebody’s door.

“I have never seen an evidence bag outside of a police lab, a prosecutor's office, or a court room,” the accuser’s lawyer pointedly said at Wednesday’s news conference. “Let alone find one in a doorway of a rape victim's mother's home.”

A leading defense attorney, not involved in the case, also weighed in on this unusual development in the Patrick Kane sexual assault investigation:

“I would be concerned that any breaches in the chain of custody or security of evidence -- or any potential that may exist for the tampering of evidence -- could adversely affect my client's case,” he said.
