Rest In Peace Grace Rebecca Mann

Apr 20, 2015

Aspiring lawyer and feminist Grace Rebecca Mann was found strangled to death at her university campus home Friday, and one of her male roommates has been charged with the crime.

The 20-year-old fallen activist, who is the daughter of Fairfax County judge Thomas P. Mann, was a junior at the University of Mary Washington in Virginia, where she was an executive board member of the college’s chapter of Feminists United.

Rest in Peace, Grace Rebbeca Mann

Ms. Mann was also an active member of PRISM, the President’s Task Force on Sexual Assault, and the Student Government Association Senate.

A history and American studies major, she minored in practical ethics as well, and ultimately intended to pursue a legal career representing indigents.

Her killer, 30-year-old Steven Vander Briel, had recently resumed his studies at the university after dropping out in 2007. He’s been charged with abduction and first-degree murder, but police have thus far declined to reveal a motive for his vicious attack.

Other than being Briel’s housemate, Ms. Mann had no known relationship to him, highlighting the prevalence of violence against women, and the urgency of the work she was pursuing to end it.

In light of that, her brutal and senseless death is made all the more tragic, and the untimely passing of such a dedicated young person is undeniably a great loss to everyone.

Rest in peace, Grace Rebecca Mann.
