The in-custody maiming of Freddie Gray and his subsequent death from those injuries has become a question for the Department of Justice to answer now, following refusal by the victim’s arresting officers to explain what happened to their suspect.
The 25-year-old, who was seen jogging and biking only hours before being picked up by Baltimore patrolmen and transported to the stationhouse, suffered a severed spine while in police detention.
A week later he died at a trauma center.
While it’s not wholly unusual for suspects to be killed during arrest, it is odd for them to show up dead (or near-death) once they’ve actually been apprehended.
And the fact that Freddie Gray is yet another black man who cops have put in a body bag this year is truly disturbing.
