Like most mass murderers before him, the cowardly #UCC shooter sought unarmed victims in a gun-free zone to maim and slaughter yesterday.
Today, although the body count is thankfully much lower than initially feared, another formerly-tranquil community grieves for loved ones lost in a deadly unprovoked rampage.
Since the mass killing of Sandy Hook first-graders and their female teachers in Newtown Connecticut in 2012, there has been a significant security presence on the campus of Umpqua Community College, “just in case” something similar happened there.
But these protectors, as the deranged 26-year-old gunman obviously knew, were also defenseless: Without firearms themselves, they posed no real threat to a homicidal intruder packing three pistols, a semiautomatic rifle, and a death wish.
After his brief assault on UCC Oregon, and just as expected, Chris Harper Mercer then committed suicide-by-cop; the notoriously “skittish” and “learning disabled” youth leaving nearly a dozen students and educators dead, and at least seven more seriously wounded…
Another gun free zone -- rich with soft targets -- became a maniac’s killing field.
