Woman Fatally Shot Meddling Social Worker in VT

Aug 8, 2015

A woman fatally shot a meddling social worker in Barre Vermont yesterday because she was upset over losing custody of her young daughter.

The shooting occurred at an office complex where the Department of Children and Families is located, and took the life of Lara Sobel just as she was leaving work.

Sobel was shot twice and died instantly, and her killer, Jody Herring, was arrested at the scene.

The gunned-down caseworker had recently testified against the shooter in child custody proceedings that saw Herring’s parental rights terminated and her 9-year-old daughter reduced to a ward of the State.

Detectives have implied that three more individuals discovered slain earlier today in Berlin VT may also be linked to the dispute, but aren’t elaborating since that crime scene is still under investigation at this hour.

Vermont has self-consciously stepped up efforts to remove kids from their lawful custodians now, following criticism over the killing of two DCF-supervised toddlers who each died last year at the hands of caretakers known by child welfare agents to be abusive.

Investigators concluded the case of 2-year-old Dezirae Sheldon of Poultney Vermont, as well as 15-month-old Peighton Geraw of Winooski Vermont, had been grossly mishandled by the Department of Children and Families, resulting in their wrongful deaths.

This story is developing.
