BENEATH THE SAND: Beach Blast Sends Bomb Squads to RI

Jul 11, 2015

Police are seeking the source of a beach blast today that resulted in one injury and a massive evacuation of beachgoers in Rhode Island.

The explosion occurred just before noon on a crowded shore called Salty Brine in Narragansett and sent one woman flying and everyone else running in panic.

Bomb squads are on the scene at this hour trying to determine what kind of device was used to set off the blast, which appeared to originate from "beneath the sand."

Witnesses to the event reported a male suspect had just buried something in the spot that exploded, then “fled” up the beach minutes before it went off.

That unknown individual is thought to have left the area, and is actively being sought now for questioning.

When the RI beach unexpectedly blew up, a passerby was heaved against some nearby rocks, but was said to be conscious while in transit to a hospital for treatment of her injuries.

The suspected bomb may have been small with respect to casualties, but according to most accounts still “felt like an earthquake.”

In fact, according to a local radio host who happened to be enjoying a relaxing summer day at the ocean this morning, it was substantial enough that "everyone who was in the water felt it."

This story is developing.
