Tech-sniffing K9 ‘Bear’ was instrumental in the Jared Fogel bust, when the black Lab found a secreted flash drive during last month’s raid on the disenfranchised Subway Guy’s Indiana home.
Bear is one of only a handful of sniffer police dogs in the U.S. who specialize in rooting out incriminating media items that suspects hide from their family members and, of course, to thwart prosecution.
According to recent revelations, the dragnet that snagged millionaire fast-foodie Fogle in the summer of 2015 was cast years ago, due to his flagrant sexual exploitation of more than a dozen minor children via kiddie porn and child prostitutes.
In July, federal investigators employed K9 Bear to thoroughly search the residence of Jared Fogle for evidence of those offenses, and the dog quickly unearthed a nasty stash of cellphones, tablets, laptops PC hard-drives, and other storage devices.
Fogle, who as a result faced at least a decade in jail for a host of related felonies, pled guilty this week to possession of child pornography and having sex with minors, in exchange for a lighter sentence of only five years.
Even if he’s able to get out of prison sooner than that, though, the confessed sex offender’s life behind bars will be a brutal and life-changing experience for him nonetheless, warn criminal justice experts, former inmates, and correction officials.
Defendants convicted of crimes against children, especially ones involving rape, are practically impossible to protect from prisoner beatings and sexual assaults themselves, once introduced to the general population.
And Fogle has more grim news to contemplate while he nervously awaits that hellish incarceration: His disgusted spouse just filed for divorce, following suit with longstanding patron, Subway Sandwiches.
