A top Cuomo aide shot in the head today by a stray bullet fired during a predawn shootout in Brooklyn is in critical condition at a NYC hospital.

The incident allegedly occurred as the governor’s first-deputy counsel for the Empire State Development agency, Carey Gabay, was walking with his brother.

“Carey is an outstanding public servant who joined our administration in 2011," Governor Cuomo said in a press statement. "He is a Harvard-educated lawyer who works for the State because he wants to give back to others and make a difference. He is just 43 years old and is a kind-hearted man. Carey is a friend to all who have the pleasure of meeting him. I ask that New Yorkers join us by keeping him, his wife Trenelle and his family in their prayers at this time.

According to WABC TV, gunfire erupted in Gabay’s neighborhood during a heated argument between an unknown number of suspects, and the state’s economic development attorney -- also a former assistant counsel to the governor -- was caught in the crossfire.

No one has been apprehended as yet, but an investigation into the cause of the shooting and the identity of the gunmen is underway.

However, an NYPD spokesman has already stated that Carey Gabay was merely “an unintended target” to mounting violence in advance of today’s West Indian #LaborDay parade and festivities.
