Suspects wanted in a deadly DC home invasion this month which involved the torture, murder, and arson of wealthy businessman Savvas Savopoulos and his wife, son and maid, have been apprehended.
A fugitive taskforce pursued Daron Wint, 34, to a borough in New York City and back again after his DNA was lifted from the crime scene, making him the prime suspect in the gruesome slayings of the Savopoulos family and their longtime house servant.
Investigators say he and a crew of co-killers were intercepted while in the process of fleeing with some $40,000 in cash they had extorted from the victims before viciously bludgeoning and stabbing them, then setting the family’s lavish home ablaze.
The unbelievably sadistic crime appears to have secretly unfolded over a period of several hours during which time the killers tortured Savopoulos’ 10-year-old son, knifing the boy as well as dousing him with gasoline before burning the $5-million Maryland mansion to the ground with the bound and wounded hostages still inside it.
Records show arrestee Daron Wint moved to the U.S. from Guyana when he was in his early twenties. The certified welder is, or was, an employee of the Savopoulos’ prosperous ironworks company and has a lengthy criminal past that includes a number of assaults and convictions.
He and his unidentified accomplices were apparently familiar with the tony neighborhood and sprawling house their unwitting targets lived in, and that the family was often lax in using a security system, relying instead on the hyper-vigilance of an aggressive guard dog named Ginger.
The fate of that canine has not been disclosed, but the destroyed multimillion-dollar estate in Woodley Park is only blocks from Vice President Biden’s own residence, adding to the exclusive community’s shock over the quadruple homicide.
In the past decade -- as a depressed economy has caused the gap between America’s rich and poor to ever widen -- brutally violent break-ins are becoming more and more commonplace. But this month’s deadly DC home invasion is, by far, the worse one yet.
