Privacy for members of the Ashley Madison dating site for two-timing wives and husbands has been totally breached, the website’s owner Avid Life Media reluctantly announced this week.
"We are working with law enforcement agencies, which are investigating this criminal act," the company said in a carefully-worded statement. "Any and all parties responsible for this act of cyber-terrorism will be held responsible."
This is just the latest hack attack in a series of similar Web intrusions, but it’s especially problematic since the private data that was just pilfered involves millions of cheating spouses’ most “sensitive” information.
Not to mention "user databases, financial information and other proprietary information," according to recent reports by the typically-trustworthy Krebs On Security blog.
Avid can actually claim -- and now lose sleep about -- some 40-million members in all, when factoring in that they also host the popular CougarLife and EstablishedMen dating dot coms.
No one has claimed responsibility for their Ashley Madison website breach yet.
